tablet and smartphone usage models | StayGoLinks

We are in a day and age where mobile computing and technology is on the rise. There is really no surprise to why this trend is growing so rapidly because tablets and smartphones enable users to have so much control and usability on the run. As a society, we like having access that tablets and smartphones provide to us. From entertainment to news and information, mobile computing gives us all of this at our fingertips. With the amount of mobile apps, 3G/4G capabilities to connect to the internet, and other easy to use features, this technology is perfect for personal and professional use on the road. Even though laptop PCs also give us a great level of computing, and is easy to carry along, they are no longer able to perform the tasks mobile devices do at the same level. While there is no foreseeable future that personal computing will become obsolete, tablets and smartphones are making great leaps to become the only relevant source of mobile computing devices.

Mobile Apps

This might be the thing that is giving mobile technology the winning edge with computing on the road. The truth is, most mobile apps are available to PCs and websites through full version software, so the services themselves are not unique. What they do offer users though is a tighter version that is easier to use, and really delivers the basics. There is no glitz and glamour behind most mobiles apps, but they do work, and they work well. Because of this, finding the information and news you want is easy to locate. Sometimes there is too much ads and crazy layouts to make it super functional while you are out about about.

As for entertainment, the functionality of game, television, and movie apps are so much easier to use on the road than a laptop. Think about the ease of logging into your Netflix or DirecTV account and going right to watching your favorite shows and movies, versus having to do a computer login, and then navigate the Netflix website. Same with simple games for entertainment. Having a mobile time killer like an Angry Birds type game, where all you need is a touch screen, has a definite edge over games that need keyboards and other PC accessories. The mobile apps are really what gives the ultimate edge to the appeal of tablets and smartphones over traditional computing.

Working on the Road

It might seem like laptops will always have an edge on getting actual work done, as well as having a place in the?professional?world. Depending on the industry, there might not be a role that tablets and smartphones can fill. However, for most business tasks, tablets are perfect to take care of business (pardon the pun) and allow users to work from the road. In this day and age,?correspondence?is some of the most important tasks that are involved in business, and shooting an email back and forth from a tablet is way easier than a computer. For instance, there is no telling how many emails I have shot off without missing a step (literally, as I?m walking), where you don?t have that kind of convenience.

As for office tasks, there is a stigma that tablets can not compete on that level. Again, look at the apps and softwares being released. Microsoft Office has mobile versions, and honestly, most work related tasks revolve around this software. With all the accessories for tablets, you can essentially turn your tablet into a laptop, although with great mobility and ease of use. You don?t need to be tethered to a computer to get your work done. In some cases, you can point to creative individuals that do need the computing power to successfully complete job tasks. That is mostly true, but even PhotoShop has a new mobile version that allows you to work from the road, which is an amazing breakthrough for photographers. So even in this instance, tablets are having the same capabilities in a professional world that PCs do.

Mobility

So here is what it all comes down to. Tablets and smartphones are extremely mobile. Most say ?well yeah, but so are laptops.? Tablets are not just mobile in the sense that it is easy to physically move around, but by being able to be used in a variety of areas. For the most part, laptop functionality ends with the absence of WiFi. Not many that I know connect to mobile networks, i.e. 3G/4G capabilities. Tablets and smartphones do have that, so they are just mobile, but also functional on the run. You can literally use these devices just about anywhere with little to no restrictions, at least not any that you wouldn?t see with a laptop as well. You can work, write emails, connect with friends, etc. without ever missing a beat or needing to take time out. The mobile nature of these devices makes all of the tasks extremely easy and fast.

There it is. Mobile technology is on the rise, and it is moving fast. Tablets and smartphones were mere novelties only a few years ago, and have emerged as viable options to completely replace other forms of mobile computing. This doesn?t mean that the computer industry is at risk, because when not on the road, there is no reason to give up your computer. The issue is, however, where we used to rely on laptops for all mobile computing tasks, they are no longer able to compete at all levels the way mobile tools do. There will always be a place for traditional computing, but that place is not on the road where WiFi access is low, demand for performance is high, and every second counts.
