Syrian activists report 23 dead in Damascus suburb

BEIRUT (AP) ? Anti-regime activists say Syrian forces have killed at least 23 people in a restive suburb of the capital Damascus.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 18 civilians were killed in an airstrike Tuesday on the city of Duma, northeast of Damascus. Five other rebel fighters were killed in clashes with regime forces nearby.

Syrian forces have stepped up their use of airpower against rebels seeking to topple President Bashar Assad as opposition fighters have made gains on the ground.

Activist say more than 35,000 people have been killed since Syria's troubles began in March, 2011.

Frankenstorm Sandy: Has Climate Change Bred a Monster?

It used to be that if you wanted a safe topic, one that was sure not to offend anyone, you?d talk about the weather. Not anymore. As we reported earlier this month, there?s been a constant debate in environmental and scientific circles about whether or not global warming is causing more hurricanes.

Now, with Hurricane Sandy, the so-called ?Frankenstorm? in the news, the debate is raging once again. And while we noted previously that scientists from the Niels Bohr Institute at Copenhagen University had found support for the idea that global warming was indeed causing more-frequent and -destructive hurricanes, opinions still vary widely.

NPR?has discussed what they call ?a hierarchy of weather events,? meaning that scientists generally feel pretty comfortable establishing climate change links when it comes to global temperature rises and extreme heat, but not so much when it comes to hurricanes.

As the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) stated, ?There is low confidence in any observed long-term (i.e., 40 years or more) increases in tropical cyclone activity (i.e., intensity, frequency, duration), after accounting for past changes in observing capabilities.?

MORE: Obama, Romney Spar on Energy and Oil, but Climate Change Is MIA

In other words, there?s not a lot of strong, reliable data for scientists to fall back on, and they don?t have the tools that would allow them to come to definitive conclusions. And while all the attention being focused on Hurricane Sandy and its potential to wreak havoc along the entire East Coast may make it seem like storms are getting more powerful, there?s a lot more natural variability over decades and centuries than can be accounted for by any one event.

To make matters even more confusing,?MIT meteorologist Kerry Emanuel?has observed?that ocean surface temperatures in the tropical waters where hurricanes and typhoons form has increased by almost one degree Fahrenheit in the past century, and higher sea surface temperatures are likely to lead to more powerful and destructive hurricanes.

But, Emanuel has also pointed out that a warming atmosphere will probably reduce the number of less powerful storms.?

So when it comes to the Frankenstorm, we may be wise to note what Andrew Revkin wrote in his?New York Times?Dot Earth blog. He referenced one of his own stories from 10 years ago that began with the following: ?Four times since the last ice age, at intervals roughly 3,000 years apart, the Northeast has been struck by cycles of storms far more powerful than any in recent times, according to a new study. The region appears to have entered a fifth era in which such superstorms are more likely.?

Oh, and take my advice?don?t talk about the weather at your next dinner party.

Do you think Hurricane Sandy is an isolated incident, or more proof that climate change is causing stronger storms? Leave your conclusions in COMMENTS.

Ennis and Farah acclaimed by Athletics Writers ? Sports Journalists ...

From the BAWA

Neil Wilson, the Daily Mail?s retiring athletics correspondent, in conversation at yesterday?s BAWA lunch with Charles van Commenee, UK Athletics? former head coach, and Laura Williamson, the Mail?s new athletics reporter

Olympic champions Mo Farah and Jessica Ennis were named athletes of the year by the British Athletics Writers? Association at the organisation?s 50th annual awards staged in London yesterday.

It is the third year in succession that these two athletes have picked up the British athletics writers? top prize.

Neither winner could be present at the lunchtime ceremony at London?s Tower Hotel, but Ennis? coach Toni Minichiello was there to accept his athlete?s award on her behalf, while Alan Watkinson, the school teacher who discovered and nurtured the teenaged Mo Farah, collected the men?s award for his former pupil.

Farah first won the award in 2006 and dominated voting for the John Rodda Award this year after his thrilling double victory over 5,000m and 10,000m at the London Olympic Games. Olympic long jump gold medallist Greg Rutherford was runner-up and high jumper Robbie Grabarz was third after winning a bronze medal in London.

Farah, 29, has now won the BAWA men?s award more times than any other athlete, moving ahead of all-time greats Lynn Davies, Sebastian Coe and Jonathan Edwards who were all triple winners.

?What a year I have had,? Farah told the audience via a video link. ?I can?t believe I have become double Olympic champion, I never thought it would happen in London. It has just been an amazing year.

?Thank you for your all your support, without it I do not think I could have managed.?

Ennis retained the Cliff Temple Award for female athlete of the year, which she has held since 2009. The 26-year-old from Sheffield was a comfortable winner of the 2012 vote after her emphatic and emotional heptathlon victory in London, which kick-started Britain?s golden hour in the Olympic Stadium on ?Super Saturday?. Ennis also won a pentathlon silver medal at the World Indoor Championships in Istanbul in March.

Sandy Sutherland, the BAWA chairman, with Olympic triple jump bronze medal-winner Yamile Aldama

Christine Ohuruogu was runner-up in the vote after winning a silver medal over 400m at London 2012, while the world indoor triple jump champion, Yamil? Aldama, was third. Ohuruogu was female athlete of the year in 2007 and 2008.

With four BAWA awards to her name, Ennis is now equal with fellow multi-eventer Denise Lewis, the 2000 Olympic heptathlon champion, and one behind Paula Radcliffe who was athlete of the year five times between 1999 and 2005.

Aldama?s triple jump victory in Istanbul also earned the 40-year-old east London resident BAWA?s 2012 Inspiration Award given in recognition of an athlete who made an outstanding performance in a single event, performed well against the odds, or is retiring after a long and distinguished career.

Aldama broke the world masters record to win world indoor gold in March then battled back from a shoulder injury to finish fifth at the Olympic Games.

The season?s sprint sensation Adam Gemili won the Jim Coote Memorial Award for junior men. The east Londoner ended his first full season in the sport as world junior 100m champion, British junior record-holder and silver medallist at the British senior championships where he won a place on the British Olympic team.

The Lillian Board Memorial Award for junior women went to Katarina Johnson-Thompson who won the world junior long jump title in Barcelona before finishing 15th in the heptathlon at London 2012. The Liverpudlian set four personal bests at the Olympics and broke the British junior record twice in 2012.

Wheelchair racer David Weir won a special award for Outstanding Achievement by a Paralympic Athlete, a category introduced by the athletics writers to mark the success of the 2012 Paralympic Games. Weir won four gold medals at London 2012 just a few months after claiming a record-equalling sixth London Marathon victory.

The Ron Pickering Memorial Award for Services to Athletics was presented to veteran athletics writer Mel Watman, a founder member of the British Athletics Writers? Association and the organisation?s honorary president. Watman, a former editor of Athletics Weekly and author of numerous books on the sport, is now co-editor of the highly respected newsletter, Athletics International.

The Fraud That Failed

Bishop Victor Curry of Miami's New Birth Baptist church speaks in his office.

Bishop Victor Curry of Miami's New Birth Baptist church has led early-vote efforts in Florida

MIAMI?Tomorrow, as the sun rises, Bishop Victor Curry of New Birth Baptist Church will wake up and race to the Stephen P. Clark Government Center in downtown. At 7 a.m., he will help lead south Florida?s first early-vote rally. As soon as he can, he will hotfoot it to the South Dade Regional Library, 30-odd minutes away, for the day?s second early-vote rally. He will find some way to flee in time to make the start of the EBA Higher Education Awareness and Dropout Prevention Initiative in Miami Gardens, the heart of black south Florida, and take the stage next to Rev. Al Sharpton. Then back on the road, north to Broward County.

The plan, coordinated by at least 150 black pastors, is called ?Operation Lemonade.? On Wednesday, I visited New Birth, parking near the van that promotes his radio talk show, and finding Curry?s office in the sprawling, 10-year-old gated complex. Outside the chapel, there?s a signed message from President Obama congratulating Curry on the church?s anniversary. Inside Curry?s office, there are multiple pictures commemorating his meetings with Sharpton and with Bill Clinton, next to his lifetime membership plaque from the NAACP, and a picture from election night 2008. That year, churches got two whole weeks to turn out the early vote. This year they get one.

?When the Republicans in the state passed the new voting laws, we discovered that they took away that Sunday right before the election,? says Curry. ?What we decided to do was view that as them giving us a lemon. We can be sour, we can moan and groan about it, or we can do something. We can make lemonade. The first thrust is this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, and then we?re going to encourage people the entire next week.?

Democrats are proud to say it: If they win this election, it?ll be because a superior ground game turned out their base and overcame a Mitt Romney comeback. In Florida, they have twice as many campaign offices as Romney-Ryan. ?With absentee ballot requests, usually the Republicans have a pretty significant advantage on us,? says Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the DNC chairwoman who represents a liberal slice of the Miami sprawl. ?We?ve cut the advantage by 85 percent.? This is true.

And they had to battle to get there. From the moment Republicans took office in 2011, controlling gubernatorial and election offices in swing states, they started tightening voting laws. In Pennsylvania, the state passed its first-ever requirement for voter ID at the polls. In Ohio, the state attempted to eliminate early-voting days for anyone not serving in the military. In Florida, it took only two months to pass a comprehensive bill that scaled back early-voting days, prevented voters from changing their addresses when they got to the polls, and started a 48-hour countdown that required voter-registration campaigns to turn in their forms within two days or pay fines?a de jure response to ACORN paranoia. That bill was filed on March 7 and become law two months later.

The Florida law became infamous. After the League of Women Voters gave up on registering voters, The Daily Show sent a reporter down to make fun of the 48-hour rule. According to a summer report by the Third Way think tank, Democrats lost 246,934 Florida voters after November 2008, and Republicans had lost only 71,829. But after November 2011, when the 48-hour law went into effect, Democrats lost 8,044 registrants; Republicans gained 18,303.

And then the Democrats got the rules reversed. In June, a Florida court struck down the 48-hour rule. In September, the state gave up on an error-filled purge of voter registrations. October was a sloppy rout for voter restrictions, as the Pennsylvania and Ohio laws were halted. ?We won in court just when we were ramping up registration,? says Wasserman Schultz. ?In Florida, we have 520,000 more registered Democrats than Republicans. If you look at the registration of Hispanic voters, since November of 2008, 195,000 Hispanic voters have registered as Democrats or independents.?

Why astronauts experience low blood pressure after returning to Earth from space

ScienceDaily (Oct. 25, 2012) ? When astronauts return to Earth, their altitude isn't the only thing that drops -- their blood pressure does too. This condition, known as orthostatic hypotension, occurs in up to half of those astronauts on short-term missions (two weeks or less) and in nearly all astronauts after long-term missions (four to six months). A new research report published online in The FASEB Journal solves the biological mystery of how this happens by showing that low gravity compromises the ability of arteries and veins to constrict normally, inhibiting the proper flow of blood.

Prevention and treatment strategies developed for astronauts may also hold promise for elderly populations on Earth who experience orthostatic hypotension more than any other age group.

"The idea of space exploration has been tantalizing the imagination of humans since our early existence. As a scientist, I have had the opportunity to learn that there are many medical challenges associated with travel in a weightless environment, such as orthostatic hypotension, bone loss and the recently recognized visual impairment that occurs in astronauts," said Michael D. Delp, Ph.D., a researcher involved in the work from the Department of Applied Physiology and Kinesiology, and the Center for Exercise Science at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida. "Although I have come to realize that it is unlikely I will ever get to fulfill my childhood dream of flying in space, I take great satisfaction with helping in the discovery of how microgravity alters the human body and how we can minimize these effects, so humans can safely explore the bounds of our universe."

To make this discovery, Delp and colleagues examined arteries and veins from mice housed at Kennedy Space Center in Florida with blood vessels from groups of mice flown on three of the last five space shuttle missions -- STS-131, STS-133 and STS-135. Mice flown on the STS-131 and STS-135 missions were tested immediately after returning to Earth, whereas mice from STS-133 were tested one, five and seven days after landing. Not only did they find that these mice experienced the equivalent of orthostatic hypotension in humans, they also discovered that it takes as many as four days in normal gravity before the condition is reversed.

"There has been considerable interest in sending humans to the moon, asteroids, and Mars," said Gerald Weissmann, M.D., Editor-in-Chief of The FASEB Journal, "but what we're finding is that extended space missions have their own inherent risks above and beyond the obvious. If we ever hope to visit distant worlds for extended periods of time -- or colonize them permanently -- we've got to figure out how to mitigate the effects that low and no gravity has on the body. This report brings us an important step closer to doing just that."

Google cameras map popular Grand Canyon trails

6 hrs.

Google and its street-view cameras already have taken users to narrow cobblestone alleys in Spain using a tricycle, inside?the Smithsonian with a push?cart and to British Columbia's snow-covered slopes by snowmobile.

The search giant now has brought its all-seeing eyes ? mounted for the first time on a backpack ? down into the Grand Canyon, showcasing the attraction's most popular hiking trails on the South Rim and other walkways.

It's the latest evolution in mapping technology for the Mountain View, Calif., company, which has used a rosette of cameras to photograph thousands of cities and towns in dozens of countries for its Street View feature. With a click of the mouse, Internet users are transported virtually for a 360-degree view of locales they may have read about only in tourist books and seen in flat, 2-D images.

"Any of these sort of iconic, cultural, historical locations that are not accessible by road is where we want to go," said Ryan Falor, product manager at Google.

Google announced the trekker earlier this year but made its first official collection of data this week at the Grand Canyon.

The backpacks aren't ready for volunteer use, but Google has said it wants to deploy them at national forests, to the narrow streets of Venice, Mount Everest and to ancient ruins and castles.

The move to capture the Grand Canyon comes after Apple chose to drop Google Maps from its mobile operating systems and opted to use its own mapping program that was derided for, among other things, poor directions and missing towns.

Steve Silverman, operations manager for Google didn't directly address the competition in saying: "Just trying to document a trail, it's going to be hard to beat this."

Google launched its Street View feature in 2007 and has expanded from five U.S. cities to more than 3,000 in 43 countries. Google teams and volunteers have covered more than 5 million miles with the Street View vehicles on a scale that other companies haven't approached, said Mike Dobson, president of Telemapics, a company that monitors mapping efforts.

"You could safely say that it's a standout, well-used application and they don't really have any competition," he said.

As the sun rose Monday, Luc Vincent, Google engineering director, strapped on one of the 40-pound backpacks and set down the Bright Angel Trail to the Colorado River ? a nearly 10-mile hike that goes from 6,900 feet in elevation to 2,400 feet. He hiked back up from Phantom Ranch, which can be 30 degrees warmer than at the rim, through the South Kaibab Trail and also gathered data on other trails.

The so-called trekker captures images every 2.5 seconds with 15 cameras that are 5 megapixels each from the rest areas, the steep switchbacks, the change from juniper trees to scrub brush and the traffic that moves aside as a courtesy to mule riders.

The GPS data is limited, so Google must compensate with sensors that record temperature, vibrations and the orientation of the device as it changes, before it?stitches?the images together and makes them available to users in a few months, Falor said.

Hikers that were on the trail when the data was gathered will have their faces blurred ? an attempt by Google to ensure privacy. Street View has run into problems in places like Europe and Australia for scooping up information transmitted over unsecured wireless networks.

A removable hard drive on the trekker stores the data gathered at the Grand Canyon. Tourists looked at the trekker strangely this week, as if it was something from outer space.

Sharon Kerfoot, a first-time visitor from Alberta said being able to view the terrain ahead of time, gauge the difficulty of the hike and know just how wide the path is would benefit those considering a trip to the Grand Canyon. She and a group of friends headed down the same path as Vincent but on mules, not foot.

"I think it's an excellent idea to give people a broader perspective on what they're getting into," she said.

What the images won't tell visitors is how much water they should carry down the trails, how to prepare for temperature changes, what type of food to bring and how much, and how best to protect the natural resources, park spokeswoman Maureen Oltrogge said.

"Stitched together with other information out there, the technology could be valuable," she said.

Jessica Biel & Justin Timberlake's Wedding Bells Bills! Selling Photos For $300,000!

justin-timberlake-jessica-biel-wedding-photos-300000.jpg

Yea, you pull a Kim Kardashian and make BANK off of your lover-ly southern Italian wedding extravaganza!

Even though we're sure newlyweds Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel are not hurting for money, it seems they have decided to pimp out their fairytale-esque wedding snaps to People Magazine for $300,000, AND have reportedly struck a deal to sell photo's to the UK's OK! magazine!

Which, is kinda strange, seeing as the pair are usually so careful about their privacy?

Hmm well, we guess it's never a bad thing to squirrel away an extra few hundred thou, especially as Justin LURRRVES to invest in tech companies, which probably gets prettaaayyy expensive!

And hey, this means we actually get to feast our peepers on alllll the pageantry surrounding the dream-like affair! Yaaaay!

Let's just hope their marriage lasts longer than Kimmy's, especially as we hear Jess is now baby crazed? although they could potentially earn a sh*t ton MORE money off a highly publicized divorce!

HA!

HR SaaS: Kicking the Business Case Tires | Consider the Source

Stanton JonesGiven the overwhelming interest in HR SaaS platforms like Workday, Oracle Taleo, SAP SuccessFactors and a plethora of others, we thought we?d share with you what we?re seeing as we?re working closely with both clients and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) providers. More specifically, what we?re seeing in terms of the ?dissonance? created by a turbo-charged SaaS market matched up with soaring client expectations around the financial benefits of SaaS.

In general, the market has three financial assumptions before the SaaS business case is even created:

  1. It will be cheaper to implement
  2. It will be cheaper to run
  3. I?ll only have to pay for what I use

We?re finding that one or more of these are not always true. Here?s why:

Implementation costs are not always less, especially when a client is already sourced

Although the implementation of SaaS platforms for human resources (HR) can typically be completed much faster given the lack of customization, the overall implementation cost is not always significantly cheaper. There are a number of factors that can affect this cost, including the client?s current hosting environment, ability to sunset existing enterprise resource planning (ERP) and hosting environments, the number of interfaces, and ? importantly ? the available resources from the client to assist in the configuration of the service. In an environment where the client has already sourced, the retained organization may not have these skills, so they need to be purchased from the SaaS provider or a systems integrator ? which can significantly increase the implementation cost.

Financial terms are usually heavily weighted to the supplier

Many SaaS providers will expect a client to prepay a significant portion of the total contract value at the start of the implementation. Given that the starting point is usually a three-year term, this can be quite a significant sum. In addition, terms generally cannot be canceled and subscription fees cannot be reduced over the course of the term for volume reductions. We?re also seeing some suppliers opening with an increase to subscription fees over the term of the agreement as functionality expands.

The business case needs to cover a long enough period to avoid at least one upgrade

In general, clients should not expect a significant savings when comparing monthly subscription fees for SaaS to the all-in cost of traditional ERP, which includes the amortized license cost, the software maintenance fees and the hosting and support costs. In fact, we?re finding that when looking at a short-term business case (say three years) where an upgrade may not occur in a traditional model, the SaaS model may actually be slightly more expensive. The real savings with SaaS comes in avoiding upgrades, which means the business case needs to extend over a long enough period to account for at least one upgrade, and that could mean at least five to seven years. Looking at this length of time, the SaaS model becomes significantly better due to the avoidance of a large-scale upgrade.

Don?t forget about the impact to the income statement and the balance sheet

Unlike a traditional ERP model where the client typically procures the licenses and hardware up front and depreciates that cost over the useful life of the asset, SaaS monthly subscription fees are expensed as incurred. Depending on how the client looks at the business case (P&L versus cash), this accounting treatment change, coupled with the size of the investment, can have a significant impact on the financials.

If you?ve worked through a HR SaaS deal as a client or as a provider, we?d like to hear your feedback ? agree or disagree?

Vilma gives Saints 'D emotional lift against Bucs

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Inspired by Jonathan Vilma's return, New Orleans' porous defense found a way to keep Tampa Bay out of the end zone, then did it again to preserve the Saints' second straight win.

Drew Brees threw for 377 yards and four touchdowns, however Sunday's 35-28 victory over the Buccaneers wouldn't have been possible without a third-quarter goal-line stand and another stop to end the game.

"I don't know how much better we got. I know we won the game. That's always a positive," safety Roman Harper said. "We were always finding ways to lose a game, and now we're finding ways to win a game.

With Vilma playing for the first time while appealing a season-long suspension for his role in the Saints bounty program and Brees shrugging off an early interception that led to Tampa Bay's first touchdown, New Orleans (2-4) took another step toward turning around its season following an 0-4 start.

Vilma provided an emotional lift, if not any game-changing plays. Brees extended his NFL record for consecutive games with at least one TD pass to 49 and launched a 95-yard scoring drive that put the Saints up 14 points after the defense stopped four straight Bucs running plays from the New Orleans 1 late in the third quarter.

Safety Malcolm Jenkins began the sequence by hustling across the field to stop Tampa Bay's Vincent Jackson from scoring on a 95-yard reception. LeGarrette Blount was stopped for no gain on three straight carries from the 1, then defensive end Cameron Jordan chased Josh Freeman out of bounds for a 4-yard loss on a quarterback keeper to prevent the Bucs from tying the score.

Twelve plays later, Pierre Thomas scored on a 5-yard run to make it 35-21.

"All of the sudden, they're about to tie the game, and Malcolm ? an unbelievable individual effort to run Vincent Jackson down, and then a goal-line stand," Brees said.

"Now in their mind, they're thinking: 'Hey, we went for it on fourth down because now we've got them pinned back and we're just expecting to stop them and have them punt it to us and get great field position.' But we had a different plan in mind. We get one first down, a big play, and all of the sudden we're going down and making it a two-possession game."

Despite missing a third-quarter field goal and failing to get anything out of the longest offensive play in franchise history, Tampa Bay (2-4) still nearly found a way to get the game into overtime.

Freeman, who threw for a career-best 420 yards and three touchdowns, marched the Bucs from their own 19 to the New Orleans 9 in the closing seconds.

On the game's final play, Freeman rolled to his left before throwing to Mike Williams for an apparent tying touchdown. But the receiver had been pushed out of the back of the end zone before coming back into the field of play. So, instead of heading to OT, the reception was wiped out by a penalty for illegal touching.

Bucs coach Greg Schiano said he didn't see what happened.

"It really doesn't matter. If it's called, it's called. You live with it. There's nothing you can do about it," Schiano said. "So whether he did, didn't, we'll see it on tape. That's life."

Brees was 27 of 37 and threw TDs passes of 17 yards to Marques Colston, 9 yards to Darren Sproles, 48 yards to Joseph Morgan and 20 yards to David Thomas to overcome the New Orleans defense yielding a season-high 513 yards.

Vilma, who has a hearing on his appeal scheduled for Oct. 30, finished with one quarterback hit but no tackles.

"I tried to not let my emotions get the best of me," Vilma said. I didn't want to put myself in a situation where I was going to hurt the team or anything like that, so I tried not to be overexcited."

Teammates said it was good to have him on the field.

"Having him back just, emotionally, really made a difference in this game," interim Saints coach Aaron Kromer said. "We were trying to get him in in certain packages, and we had a couple of linebackers go down early in the game."

Vilma was very business-like, answering questions while getting dressed in the locker room. He said he wasn't sure how many snaps he played, but that he felt fine and believed he was in good enough condition to play an entire game.

The ninth-year pro said he had always believed he'd get an opportunity to play this season.

"Most people didn't, but it was a long, drawn-out process, and for good or bad, it ended up this way and I was able to be back on the field with my teammates. That was a great feeling," Vilma said.

Former NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue has been appointed as arbitrator for Vilma's appeal, as well as the hearings for three other players facing suspensions of various lengths.

"I think it's a good first step for Paul to be the neutral arbitrator," said Vilma, who played mostly in passing situations on Sunday. "We expect that he's going to do things in a neutral capacity, which will allow us to cross-examine some of the witnesses and allow us to see the evidence, if there is any evidence."

NOTES: Jackson had seven receptions for a Bucs-record 216 yards. ... Lance Moore had nine receptions for 121 yards for the Saints. ... It was Kromer's last game as interim coach. Assistant head coach Joe Vitt returns from his suspension this week and will lead the Saints in Sean Payton's absence the rest of the season.

Link Seen Between Bisphenol A And Childhood ObesityYour Health ...

From The Detroit Free Press?..

Much of the controversy surrounding bisphenol A, used to make plastic, has focused on studies linking the chemical to breast cancer, testicular cancer, reproductive deformities and neurological defects, but a new study points to an association between the chemical and obesity in children.

Writing in the Journal of the American Medical Association, doctors from New York University report that a study of 2,838 youths, ages 6 to 19, found that higher levels of BPA in urine was ?significantly associated? with obesity.

Authors of the study said children with the highest levels of BPA in their urine also had the highest rates of obesity, a prevalence of 22.3%. By comparison, children with the lowest levels of BPA had an obesity prevalence of 10.3%.

?To our knowledge,? the authors write, ?this is the first report of an association of an environmental chemical exposure with childhood obesity in a nationally representative sample.?

However, as the researchers acknowledge, the study does not come close to establishing that BPA causes obesity. In fact, the research may show something very different.

?For all we know, it could be the obesity that makes (the children) have higher BPA levels,? says Ellen Connor, an associate professor of pediatric endocrinology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

How the Obama-Romney foreign policy debate could determine the election

With turmoil increasing in world hot spots, foreign policy and national security have become major presidential campaign issues. From China to Israel, Iran to Syria, stateless terrorists to struggling alliances, Mitt Romney and Barack Obama will have plenty to debate Monday night.

By Brad Knickerbocker,?Staff writer / October 21, 2012

President Barack Obama and Republican presidential candidate, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney exchange views during the second presidential debate Oct. 16 at Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y.

How important is Monday night?s foreign policy debate between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney? The way things stand right now, it could determine the outcome on Election Day.

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

Nobody would have predicted that just a few weeks ago. But with Mr. Romney?s late-in-the-day insurgency in the polls, the race has become dead even. And momentum ? what George H. W. Bush called ?the Big Mo? ? seems to be on Romney?s side.

Two main reasons:

First, Romney clearly won the first debate against President Obama, who even jokes now about ?the nice long nap I had in the first debate.? In their second set-to, Obama was much more engaged, even animated. But aside from Romney?s gaffe about ?binders full of women,? the challenger pretty much held his own against the incumbent president.

Second, most voting Americans may worry about the economy first, but foreign policy and national security have become much more important as well. Israel?s security, Iran?s nuclear program, China?s currency, violent revolution in Syria, and certainly Libya since the US ambassador was killed in a terrorist attack there ? all have become major campaign issues and therefore debating points.

Also, while Romney and his running mate Rep. Paul Ryan have no foreign policy experience, and that can be seen as a weakness in the GOP ticket, Obama has a mixed record to defend.

Think you know the Middle East? Take our geography quiz.

You can be sure Romney will try to paint that as adding up to weakness and indecision ? ?leading from behind? is sure to be brought up ? not to mention what he claims is a certain distancing from Israel.

?Unfortunately, this president?s policies have not been equal to our best examples of world leadership. And nowhere is this more evident than in the Middle East,? Romney said in his speech at the Virginia Military Institute earlier this month. ?When we look at the Middle East today, with Iran closer than ever to nuclear weapons capability, with the conflict in Syria threatening to destabilize the region and with violent extremists on the march, and with an American ambassador and three others dead ? likely at the hands of al-Qaida affiliates ? it?s clear that the risk of conflict in the region is higher now than when the president took office.?

The terrorist attack on the US consulate in Benghazi, Libya ? which came on the anniversary of 9/11 at a time when much of the region was in turmoil over a crude anti-Islam YouTube video made in the United States ? is particularly troublesome for Obama.

Washington Post foreign affairs columnist David Ignatius reports that initial CIA ?talking points,? provided by a senior US intelligence official, supported UN Ambassador Susan Rice?s early contention that the attack in Benghazi was tied to protests against the YouTube video.

How Human Beings Almost Vanished From Earth In 70,000 B.C.

Volcano Robert Krulwich/NPR

Add all of us up, all 7 billion human beings on earth, and clumped together we weigh roughly 750 billion pounds. That, says Harvard biologist E.O. Wilson, is more than 100 times the biomass of any large animal that's ever walked the Earth. And we're still multiplying. Most demographers say we will hit 9 billion before we peak, and what happens then?

Well, we've waxed. So we can wane. Let's just hope we wane gently. Because once in our history, the world-wide population of human beings skidded so sharply we were down to roughly a thousand reproductive adults. One study says we hit as low as 40.

Forty? Come on, that can't be right. Well, the technical term is 40 "breeding pairs" (children not included). More likely there was a drastic dip and then 5,000 to 10,000 bedraggled Homo sapiens struggled together in pitiful little clumps hunting and gathering for thousands of years until, in the late Stone Age, we humans began to recover. But for a time there, says science writer Sam Kean, "We damn near went extinct."

I'd never heard of this almost-blinking-out. That's because I'd never heard of Toba, the "supervolcano." It's not a myth. While details may vary, Toba happened.

Toba, The Supervolcano

Once upon a time, says Sam, around 70,000 B.C., a volcano called Toba, on Sumatra, in Indonesia went off, blowing roughly 650 miles of vaporized rock into the air. It is the largest volcanic eruption we know of, dwarfing everything else...

Volcano sizes Robert Krulwich/NPR

That eruption dropped roughly six centimeters of ash ? the layer can still be seen on land ? over all of South Asia, the Indian Ocean, the Arabian and South China Sea. According to the Volcanic Explosivity Index, the Toba eruption scored an "8", which translates to "mega-colossal" ? that's two orders of magnitude greater than the largest volcanic eruption in historic times at Mount Tambora in Indonesia, which caused the 1816 "Year Without a Summer" in the northern hemisphere.

With so much ash, dust and vapor in the air, Sam Kean says it's a safe guess that Toba "dimmed the sun for six years, disrupted seasonal rains, choked off streams and scattered whole cubic miles of hot ash (imagine wading through a giant ashtray) across acres and acres of plants." Berries, fruits, trees, African game became scarce; early humans, living in East Africa just across the Indian Ocean from Mount Toba, probably starved, or at least, he says, "It's not hard to imagine the population plummeting."

Then ? and this is more a conjectural, based on arguable evidence ? an already cool Earth got colder. The world was having an ice age 70,000 years ago, and all that dust hanging in the atmosphere may have bounced warming sunshine back into space. Sam Kean writes "There's in fact evidence that the average temperature dropped 20-plus degrees in some spots," after which the great grassy plains of Africa may have shrunk way back, keeping the small bands of humans small and hungry for hundreds, if not thousands of more years.

So we almost vanished.

But now we're back.

It didn't happen right away. It took almost 200,000 years to reach our first billion (that was in 1804), but now we're on a fantastic growth spurt, to 3 billion by 1960, another billion almost every 13 years since then, till by October, 2011, we zipped past the 7 billion marker, says writer David Quammen, "like it was a "Welcome to Kansas" sign on the highway."

In his new book Spillover, Quamman writes:

We're unique in the history of mammals. We're unique in this history of vertebrates. The fossil record shows that no other species of large-bodied beast ? above the size of an ant, say or an Antarctic krill ? has ever achieved anything like such abundance as the abundance of humans on Earth right now.

But our looming weight makes us vulnerable, vulnerable to viruses that were once isolated deep in forests and mountains, but are now bumping into humans, vulnerable to climate change, vulnerable to armies fighting over scarce resources. The lesson of Toba the Supervolcano is that there is nothing inevitable about our domination of the world. With a little bad luck, we can go too.

We once almost did.

Radiolab regular Sam Kean's new book on genetics, The Violinist's Thumb, tells the story of Toba, the supervolcano, to explore how human genes record a "bottleneck" or a drastic narrowing of genetic diversity 70,000 years ago. David Quammen's new book Spillover is about people pushing into forests, swamps and places where viruses have been hiding. Those viruses are now beginning to cross over into horses, pigs, bats, birds and, inevitably, they threaten to "spillover" into us. For a virus, or bacteria, 7 billion potential hosts look like a fantastic opportunity.

Multiple Sclerosis MS Treatment eBook Cure By ... - Fitness For Health

Multiple Sclerosis MS Treatment eBook Cure By Dr. Gary M. LevinClick Image To Visit SiteYou are unable to enjoy your favorite things knowing the next attack is just a matter of time. Sometimes the attack?s "remission" leaves you with residual, usually permanent, and scary symptoms. You suffer month after month and find you are losing hope of ever getting better.

That?s a very sad place for anyone to be. I know. I?ve been treating patients with multiple sclerosis for 30 years.

It?s like your body is fighting an all-out war with a dangerous intruder that doesn?t exist. Your doctor may be putting on a brave face, but the truth is many physicians are just as frustrated as you are. They try every known cure, treatment and medically accepted idea ? yet NOTHING works!

In 1998, 13 years ago, I had a heart ailment which required surgical intervention. While recovering in cardiac rehabilitation, I had the unexpected opportunity to work with a colleague who practiced allopathic and alternative medicine. I was very impressed with what I saw.

Having been trained in the sciences, I decided to dive deep into this approach, serve a two-year preceptorship and test natural remedies and alternative treatments for diseases.

It was here that I discovered powerful breakthroughs that would have profound impacts for Multiple Sclerosis patients. Here was the highly effective KEY to slowing deterioration, preventing attacks, and promoting regeneration.

The healing process is carried out through a simple step-by-step method that rehabilitates your immune system and boosts your supporting body systems to rid it of all symptoms (and types) of Multiple Sclerosis PLUS re-energizes and purifies your body for maximum health.

To be honest, I would have been elated if my step-by-step Treatment System simply produced modest improvements in my patients. But the results were far better than anyone could ever expect?

Well, this may sound unusual, but if you think about it again you will come to the same conclusion as I did: "Multiple Sclerosis is just another symptom of the REAL disease you have"

So what is the real disease you suffer from? Well, the simple answer is that you have an overactive immune system disease. Your immune system "freaks out" when it meets your myelin sheaths and attacks them. The fact that you are diagnosed with MS is just because of the fact that your immune system "freaks out" in a way that creates the MS symptoms. But you?re NOT having a "MS" disease. You are having an overactive or blinded immune system disease!

The sad truth is that the strong toxic effect of all these drugs gradually poisons the whole body, which at the end of the day, only makes Multiple Sclerosis attacks and permanent damage worse!

The healing process is done by using a simple step-by-step method that rehabilitates your immune system and boosts supporting body systems to get rid of all symptoms (and types) of Multiple Sclerosis PLUS re-energizes and purifies your body for maximum health.

It shouldn?t be any surprise to people that directed nutrition and simple plants and vitamins can be the basis for powerful cures. Contrary to popular belief, even prescription drugs aren?t wholly manufactured from synthetics. Often a rare plant, available only in the rain forests of the Amazon, is the basis of powerful prescription medications. And don?t forget that your body is MADE FROM natural materials and incorporates a system that uses natural products such as food to constantly rebuild and heal. I followed this basic principle of pharmacology to find life-giving plants and herbs that could be the basis for reversing Multiple Sclerosis. This would not only give patients comfort and new hope, but give their bodies a way to build strength and coordination and promote a far stronger immune system.

The vast majority of people see a major improvement within just a few short weeks. It really doesn?t matter how long you have suffered with Multiple Sclerosis or what else you have tried, the results are almost always the same.

MY method treats ALL types including: "Benign" MS, clinically isolated syndrome (CIS), galloping MS, Schilder?s Disease and Neuromyelitis optica (Devic?s Syndrome).

Natural and alternative medicine works on the WHOLE body. It deals with "system healing" ? not specific disease healing, which is why you can never find one exact formula fit to heal each and every person.

Hard to believe? That?s right, I myself can?t comprehend it but numbers don?t lie. Today ADRs are the third leading cause of death!

The danger of passive smoking or illegal drugs is frequently aired in heath campaigns and outraged newspaper editorials, but ADRs ? which exact a far greater toll of misery ? very rarely trigger the same level of indignation.

If you were to ask most doctors about ADRs, they would give you one of the answers I used to give? Read more?

Turbo switch of calcium pump in biological cells discovered

ScienceDaily (Oct. 21, 2012) ? A Danish-British research team has discovered a turbo switch in the vital calcium pump in our body's cells. In studies at the X-ray source DORIS at Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotorn DESY in Hamburg and the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility ESRF in Grenoble the team discovered that the on-off switch of the pump has a previously unknown third position, which switches the pump into a turbo gear.

The group of Henning Tidow from Aarhus University and Lisbeth Poulsen from the University of Copenhagen published its studies in the British journal Nature. "The discovery not only improves our understanding of a fundamental mechanism in the biology of all higher organisms, but could one day allow for better treatment of certain diseases in which the calcium balance is disturbed," says Tidow. The researchers used the measuring station of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory EMBL at DORIS.

The element calcium plays a central role in many processes of life, such as cell division, the day-night cycle and the communication of cells. The decisive factor is a gradient in the calcium concentration, which is normally high outside the cell and low inside it. This gradient is maintained among others through a calcium pump, which occurs in all higher organisms (eukaryotes) -- from the nettle to the blue whale. For example, under stress the calcium concentration in the cell increases and triggers a corresponding reaction. Afterwards, the concentration must be lowered again.

"The calcium transport from the cell requires a lot of energy. It is therefore important that the pump is activated only when needed," explains Poulsen. The pump -- known as PMCA (plasma-membrane calcium-ATPase) -- thus has a switch, which is actuated by the protein calmodulin. When calcium binds to calmodulin, the latter changes its shape so that it can dock onto a binding site of the cell's calcium pump, thereby activating the pump. When the calcium concentration in the cell increases, more and more pumps are thus switched on.

The researchers led by Tidow viewed the entire switching complex with X-rays to reveal its molecular structure. They chose the switching complex from cells of the plant thale cress (Arabidopsis thaliana), studying it first in crystal form and then in solution, which is closer to the natural environment of the molecule. "Based on this analysis, we were able to create a detailed three-dimensional model of the region of the calcium pump that interacts with calmodulin," says Tidow. "To our great surprise, we found that the calcium pump has two binding sites for calmodulin and not just one as previously thought."

The switching complex thus consists of a dumbbell-like structure with two calmodulin binding sites. To determine whether the second site has a biological significance, the researchers tested pumps in which they had disabled one switch. Indeed, these pumps could not run at full power. "Our results show that the calcium pump is controlled in three steps," explains Poulsen. "It is switched off when no calmodulin is bound to the switching complex. The pump is running at medium speed as soon as one binding site is occupied, and at full speed when calmodulin is bound to both sites."

The pump is thus activated step by step, depending on how much calcium is present in the cell. When the calcium concentration increases, the pump first operates in an energy-efficient way at moderate speed. If the calcium threatens to reach an amount that is dangerous for the cell, the pump changes into the turbo gear, which enables it to very quickly reduce the concentration.

Bioinformatics analyses revealed that this double switch occurs not only in all plant species, but in general in all cells with a nucleus (eukaryotes). "This study underscores the strength of integrating structural biology in interdisciplinary research," underlines Poul Nissen of Aarhus University. As the next step, the researchers aim to decipher the structure of the entire calcium pump.
