An airborne wind turbine turns sea breezes into electricity

ROTOR POWER: These rotors serve as both turbines and propellers. Each of the four rotors on the Wing 7 contains a permanent magnet that spins in the breeze to generate electricity. Those electrons travel back to the earth via a tether that connects the kite to land or to a floating platform.

AUTOPILOT: An onboard computer housed just behind the nose cone makes adjustments to allow the Wing 7 to generate the most power in flight. Carbon fiber throughout the kite makes it light but strong: the 120-pound device can pull more than three tons. ?It can pull your car away,? says Makani Power's Corwin Hardham.

The powerful thrust of ocean-spawned winds can zip a kite surfer across the sea's surface at up to 55 miles per hour. Engineers are now trying to harvest the power in that wind to generate electricity. The Wing 7 airborne wind turbine pictured here is a prototype of a leading contender for the job. The autonomous, lightweight device is tethered to land or to a floating platform; when wind speeds pick up, four rotors fly it up above 820 feet in a circle perpendicular to the wind. As the air rushes across the carbon-fiber wing, the rotors generate electricity by spinning permanent magnets. ?The rotors are both propellers and turbines,? notes mechanical engineer Corwin Hardham, CEO and co-founder of Makani Power, which created the Wing 7. An onboard computer makes constant adjustments.

The idea of generating power with kites, to avoid the fickleness of winds closer to the earth, is centuries old; modern iterations?including schemes for harvesting energy by flying into jet streams?date back to at least the 1970s. Makani intends to meet that challenge by designing its kite to work over the ocean, where the wind blows fairly constantly, and to cover a wide expanse of sky in its circular flight. Even relatively light winds that fail to stir traditional turbines can speed the light, tethered aircraft at more than 100 miles per hour and allow it to generate power.

NY court revives lawsuits between Mashreq, Algosaibi, al-Sanea

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A divided New York state appeals court on Tuesday reinstated two lawsuits involving the Algosaibi family conglomerate, Dubai-based Mashreqbank PSC and Maan al-Sanea, the Saudi billionaire head of the Saad Group, in connection with a longstanding fight over an alleged multibillion-dollar fraud.

The ruling, which found that New York was the appropriate forum to hear the lawsuits, is the latest development in the global legal battle between al-Sanea and his in-laws, the Algosaibis. A spokesman for al-Sanea declined to comment on Tuesday's decision.

The Algosaibi family claims al-Sanea, who married into the family 30 years ago, defrauded it of billions of dollars after he was put in charge of its financial businesses. Al-Sanea and the Saad Group have denied the allegations.

The 2009 collapse of al-Sanea's Awal Bank and Algosaibis' The International Banking Corporation, both based in Bahrain, left more than 100 banks, including Deutsche Bank, HSBC and Societe Generale, owed an estimated $22 billion.

Since then, the Algosaibi family and al-Sanea have faced off in courts in New York, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, London, the Cayman Islands and Geneva.

In 2009, Mashreqbank sued the Algosaibis in New York court, seeking to recover $150 million in foreign exchange trades executed in New York. Those funds eventually were transferred into an account controlled by al-Sanea, according to the bank's lawsuit.

The Algosaibis then filed a lawsuit in New York against al-Sanea, claiming he and his Awal Bank had used Algosaibi accounts as part of a massive fraud. The Algosaibis also asserted in court filings that Mashreqbank aided al-Sanea in the alleged scheme, according to the decision.

The two lawsuits were dismissed in 2010 by state Supreme Court Justice Richard Lowe, who granted al-Sanea's request to toss out the case against him, saying it did not properly belong in New York state court. As a result, he also dismissed the lawsuit brought by Mashreqbank, since the two cases were closely intertwined.

In a 3-2 ruling, an intermediate state appeals court reversed that decision, ruling that Lowe had overstepped his authority and that New York was an appropriate forum for the complaints.

"New York has a compelling interest in adjudicating controversies that implicate its preeminent position in the international banking system," the majority wrote in the ruling from the Appellate Division, First Department.

In a dissent, however, two justices said Lowe had correctly found that the case should be tried elsewhere, since the dispute involves foreign entities, evidence and witnesses are located outside of New York and the "resolution likely requires the application of foreign law."

Eric Lewis, a lawyer for the Algosaibi company, said in a statement the ruling recognized the "critical role of New York courts" in combating international fraud.

"In today's world, frauds can involve numerous countries, none of which may have the resources or critical involvement to investigate," he said.

A lawyer for Mashreqbank, Carmine Boccuzzi, said the bank was "confident it will prevail" in its claim against the Algosaibis.

A 3-2 ruling typically means the state's highest court, the Court of Appeals, will hear an appeal if al-Sanea decides to file one.

The cases are Mashreqbank PSC v. Ahmed Hamad Al Gosaibi and Brothers Co, and Ahmed Hamad Al Gosaibi and Brothers Co v. Maan Abdul Waheed Al Sanea et al., New York State Supreme Court, Appellate Division, First Department, Nos. 6917 and 6918. NBC renews 'The Voice' for two more seasons

NBC has picked up "The Voice" for two additional cycles.

The network said Tuesday that the singing-competition series would return for two additional cycles for spring and fall 2013.

"This pickup will assure the many dedicated 'Voice' fans that this innovative show will continue to bring some of the most talented new voices to the world?s attention through all of next year,? NBC Entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt said in a statement.

The series, which shifted to fall from a spring schedule for its third season, recently added a spring cycle, with Usher and Shakira subbing for original judges Cee Lo Green and Christina Aguilera for its fourth cycle. (Blake Shelton and Adam Levine will continue to serve as coaches for both runs.) ?

"The Voice's" fall ratings performance, though down from its strong sophomore run, has validated the fall move. After growing in its second week, hitting a high of a 4.7 rating among adults 18-49 on Sept. 17, "The Voice" dropped only 11 percent to a 4.2 against Monday's premieres of the CBS comedy block and ABC's?"Dancing With the Stars"?and topped both for the night. Even with its stronger numbers from earlier in the year, "The Voice" often was eclipsed in the demo by CBS.?

Season-to-date, "The Voice" is averaging a 4.5 rating through its first two Mondays in the demo and a 4.3 on Tuesdays. In total viewers, the Carson Daly-hosted series is averaging 12.9 million total viewers on Mondays and 12.5 million on Tuesdays, according to Nielsen, ranking as the Nos. 1 and 2 nonsports telecasts among the Big Four in the demo. Year-over-year, NBC's Monday schedule has posted a 122 percent growth in the demo. ?

Dutch Van Gogh Museum closes, masterpieces moved

AMSTERDAM (AP) ? The operation began moments after the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam closed Sunday evening. Men removed alarm tags from behind some of Vincent Van Gogh's greatest masterpieces, including "Sunflowers," ''Irises" and the famously crooked "Bedroom," and quickly pulled the paintings down from the museum's walls.

Fortunately, they were not thieves carrying out an epic heist, but curators preparing the works for transport to a temporary location across town where they will be on display for the next seven months while the museum is closed for renovations.

In all, 75 pieces ? the cream of the biggest collection of Vincent Van Gogh's work ? are moving to The Hermitage, an Amsterdam dependency of the Russian state museum.

Watching the lifeblood of his museum disappear, Director Axel Ruger said he wasn't nervous about the possibility the paintings could be damaged or stolen before they return next year.

"We do this all the time" when individual paintings go on loan to another museum, he said. But never on this scale, he conceded.

"I cannot really say much about the (security) measures that are being taken, because you will understand that we need to keep those confidential in order to safeguard the security of the transport," he said.

Standing near a blank space on the wall where Van Gogh's final work, the 1890 painting "Wheatfield with Crows," had hung just minutes earlier, Curator Leo Jansen described in brief the treatment the paintings would undergo.

After being loaded onto felt-covered trolleys, they would be taken to a workshop to be wrapped in protective insulation and packed into hard-shell carrying cases called "turtles" that are resistant to both physical shocks and temperature changes.

The cases have been assigned code numbers rather than bearing the paintings' individual names.

About an hour later, the first shipment was loaded onto a yellow van and then driven away under police escort. The route each shipment followed was kept secret until the last moment.

The operation continued like clockwork through Sunday night and into the day Monday in order to get the paintings on display again as soon as possible: the Van Gogh Museum is Amsterdam's most popular, attracting 1.6 million visitors in 2011 ? eclipsing both the Rembrandt-rich Rijksmuseum and the Anne Frank House museum.

The exhibit at The Hermitage opens Saturday and runs through mid-April, with the Van Gogh Museum to reopen on April 25, 2013.

The closure of the Van Gogh Museum was timed in part to coincide with the reopening next door of the lesser-known Stedelijk, or city museum, which houses works by Dutch Modernists Piet Mondriaan and Gerrit Rietveld, as well as Pablo Picasso, Marcel Duchamp, Henri Matisse and many others.

Dubbed "the bathtub" by local press, the most notable new feature of the renovated Stedelijk is a white roof with an overhang that stretches so far from the side of the building it looks like it might simply break off.

Architects say it is structurally sound, made possible thanks to a stronger-than-steel composite material.
