The American college student killed Friday amid bloody protests in Egypt was in the country teaching young children English and bettering his Arabic speaking skills, family members said.

Andrew Driscoll Pochter, 21, a student at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio and a native of Chevy Chase, Md., was killed in the city of Alexandria during clashes between anti-government demonstrators and supporters of President Mohamed Morsi, the college said in a statement.

Pochter was apparently watching the violent protests as a bystander when he was fatally stabbed by an unidentified protester, his family said in a statement uploaded to Facebook.

?He went to Egypt because he cared profoundly about the Middle East, and he planned to live and work there in the pursuit of peace and understanding. Andrew was a wonderful young man looking for new experiences in the world and finding ways to share his talents while he learned,? the statement reads.

Gen. Amin Ezzeddin, a senior security official in Alexandria, told Reuters that Pochter was using a mobile phone camera near an office of Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood as it was being ransacked by protesters. He died at a military hospital, Ezzeddin said.

Pochter was due at the end of the summer to begin his junior year at Kenyon, a liberal arts college northeast of Columbus, Ohio. He was planning to spend his spring semester abroad in Jordan, his family said.

The college said in an online statement that Pochter was an intern at AMIDEAST, an American non-profit organization ?engaged in international education, training and development activities in the Middle East and North Africa,? according to the group?s website.

The AMIDEAST internship is not affiliated with Kenyon, the college said.

Two years ago, Pochter lived with a host family in Morocco, according to an article he wrote for the Al Arabiya News in June 2011. The article centered on the promise of the Arab Spring protests that ousted President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt earlier that year.

?By their participation in community protests, members of my host family and friends are trying to reinvent themselves as members of their society and changing how the rest of the world perceives them,? Pochter wrote, referencing his Moroccan host family. ?By voicing their opinions, they can help shape the true face of this Moroccan generation, not by what the media say.?

Pochter was one of the student leaders of Hillel, a campus Jewish group with chapters across the country, according to a November 2012 article in The Kenyon Collegian, the student newspaper.

The U.S. State Department on Saturday confirmed Pochter?s death and offered sympathy to his loved ones.

?We extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends. We are providing appropriate consular assistance from our Embassy in Cairo and our Bureau of Consular Affairs at the State Department,? said department spokeswoman Marie Harf.

At least 80 other people have been wounded in the Alexandria protests, Egyptian state news agency MENA reported.

The protests are part of the buildup to nationwide "June 30" demonstrations marking a year since Morsi's election. Morsis opponents hope to force early presidential elections, citing a range of social and economic issues.

Morsi's supporters have promised that they will also take to the streets to defend the Muslim Brotherhood-backed government.

"There are no services. We can't find diesel or gasoline," Mohamed Abdel Latif, an accountant, told Reuters. "We elected Morsi, but this is enough."

NBC News' Charlene Gubash contributed to this report from Cairo, Egypt. M. Alex Johnson and Jeff Black also contributed.

Megaupload's Kim Dotcom mulls legal action over Leaseweb 'data ...

Published time: June 27, 2013 19:48 AFP Photo / Getty Images / Rainier Ehrhardt

Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom may be suing server hosting company Leaseweb over a ?data massacre." The Dutch company says it deleted files from 630 servers due to lack of interest in them, but Dotcom has revealed letters proving otherwise.

The revelation comes a week after Dotcom accused the US government and Leaseweb of deleting millions of personal files without warning, including ?petabytes of pictures, backups, personal & business property.?

Most of the permanently deleted data came from European users, with servers then re-provisioned to other customers ? despite the fact that Megaupload had specifically requested that the hosting provider preserve the information.

?They deleted petabytes of data in the face of Megaupload?s data preservation notices. Our legal team asked them multiple times not to delete the data while the US court is deciding the pending cases including the rights of our users,? TorrentFreak quoted Dotcom as saying.

But Leaseweb?s senior regulatory counsel, Alex de Joode, said his company deleted the data and re-provisioned the servers ?after a year of nobody showing any interest? in them.

?We did inform Megaupload about our decision to re-provision the servers,? de Joode said in a June 19 statement, thus disputing Dotcom?s accusation that the decision was made "without warning.? De Joode said that Leaseweb received no answer from the Megaupload team, so they ?commenced the re-provisioning of the servers in February 2013.?

?To minimize security risks and maximize the privacy of our clients, it is a standard procedure at Leaseweb to completely clean servers before they are offered to any new customer,? he said.

To back up his accusations, Kim Dotcom has published an email which was sent from Megaupload?s legal counsel to Leaseweb in March 2012. The letter allegedly shows that Megaupload did, in fact, request preservation of the files.

"Megaupload continues to request that Leaseweb preserve any and all information, documentation and data related to Megaupload - as destruction by Leaseweb would appear to be in violation of amongst other things the applicable civil litigation data preservation rules and would interfere with evidence in a criminal matter [...]," said the letter. The email is signed by Megaupload lawyer Ira Rothken and addressed to Leaseweb?s A.H. Bram de Haas van Dorsser.

The email adds that ?the Mega data on the servers at Leaseweb contain private and sensitive customer data and is subject to applicable privacy and data retention laws.?

?Megaupload is negotiating with the United States to discern feasibility of consumer data access and the conditions for the same," Rothken wrote in the letter.?

Megaupload boss Kim Dotcom (AFP Photo / Michael Bradley)

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) representing the file-sharing website in court made a similar request to Leaseweb USA in April.

?We now write to formally request that you preserve that material both for purposes of contemplated future litigation and as a matter of obligation and courtesy to the innocent individuals whose materials have unfortunately been swept up into this case,?
the EFF letter reads.

According to Dotcom, Megaupload?s legal team is analyzing whether Leaseweb violated the law.

?I can tell you that we are contemplating legal action against Leaseweb,? he told TorrentFreak on Wednesday.

?We believe that Leaseweb acted inappropriately under the circumstances when they destroyed data,? Rothken told the blogging website. ?Ultimately we blame the United States who exercised constructive control over Megaupload?s assets and who had the obligation, resources, and ability to preserve all relevant and exonerating evidence including the data located at Leaseweb and failed to do so,? he added.

But Leaseweb claims it done nothing wrong. In a June 26 statement, the company stressed that ?the contract between Leaseweb B.V. and Megaupload was governed by Dutch law.?

?This means the termination, and subsequent data retention needs to be valid under Dutch law. As there was no claim from the Dutch authorities on the data, the data was not subject to evidence rules. Also Dutch and European Privacy legislation prohibit giving third parties (i.e. MegaUpload customers, or Instra) direct access to their data,? the statement read.

Dotcom, who made a fortune from his file-sharing service Megaupload, is currently under a federal investigation, launched by the US Department of Justice after police raided his home. He is currently free on bail in New Zealand, with an extradition trial set for August.

The US has charged the Megaupload founder with facilitating copyright fraud on a massive scale, racketeering, and money-laundering, which carries maximum sentence of 20 years in jail.

Authorities claim Megaupload has cost copyright holders upwards of $500 million in lost revenues, due to content being illegally uploaded to its servers. The Department of Justice also believes Dotcom illegally earned $175 million by selling ads and subscriptions on the site.

On the anniversary of his arrest last January, Dotcom launched a new file-hosting site called ?Mega.?

It?s Groundhog Day for Fact-Checkers

Patriot Majority USA, a Democratic political action committee, taps the same old playbook from summer 2012, dredging up all-too-predictable Medicare and health care claims in attacking Arkansas Republican Rep. Tom Cotton, a potential 2014 Senate candidate.

The group?s ad, launched with the Senate Majority PAC, claims that Cotton supported a plan that ?essentially ends Medicare? and costs ?some seniors $6,000 more a year.? Sound familiar? We debunked those same distortions from this very same Democratic group last July ? we?re only a week shy of publishing this story on the same day we posted last year?s. The ad also throws in the convoluted claim that Cotton, by voting to repeal the Affordable Care act, was ?voting Congress taxpayer-funded health care for life.?

Cotton, an Army veteran and lawyer who?s a freshman in the House, hasn?t declared his candidacy, but Democratic Sen. Mark Pryor faces a potentially tough reelection race in 2014.

So, the target for Patriot Majority and Senate Majority PAC is new; the tactics, not so much. In fact, as Glenn Kessler, the Washington Post?s Fact Checker, said in writing about this ad, all three major fact-checking organizations (FactCheck.org, PolitiFact.com and The Fact Checker) have previously debunked these claims.

Let?s start with the claim that Cotton was ?voting Congress taxpayer-funded health care for life.? Actually, Cotton cosponsored and voted for a bill to repeal the Affordable Care Act, which requires members of Congress and their staffs to get health insurance through the exchanges created by the law. If the ACA were to be repealed, members of Congress and their staffs would continue to get their health insurance through the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program, an exchange-like program that offers a choice of many private plans to more than 8 million federal employees and retirees.

In other words, one impact of repealing the law would be that Congress would continue getting health insurance from the FEHB program, which was created in 1959.

It?s true that federal government retirees can continue to receive insurance through the FEHB program as long as they?re eligible for an immediate annuity and were enrolled in the program for at least five years before retirement. And the government pays a good chunk of federal employees? premiums: an average of 72 percent. It?s largely ?taxpayer-funded,? just as most work-based coverage is largely employer-funded. But that?s expected to still be the case once members start getting insurance through the exchanges. There?s concern on Capitol Hill that the transition won?t be that smooth, but congressional staffs are expected to get the same benefits, simply from a different insurance source.

Medicare Memories

As we mentioned, nearly one year ago, we fact-checked the claims that lawmakers supported a plan to ?end Medicare? that would have cost seniors an additional $6,000. (And the claims were old even then ? the ?end Medicare? claim made our ?Whoppers of 2011? list.) The reference is to the budget plan from Rep. Paul Ryan ? but the ?end Medicare? quote is taken out of context, and the $6,000 claim pertains to his plan from 2011. That was before Cotton was even elected.

The ad says Cotton was ?supporting a plan that the Wall Street Journal said essentially ends Medicare,? as the phrase ?essentially end Medicare? and a citation for the Journal pops up on screen. But the April 4, 2011, article said that Ryan?s plan would ?essentially end Medicare ? as a program that directly pays those bills.?

Wall Street Journal, April 4, 2011: The plan would essentially end Medicare, which now pays most of the health-care bills for 48 million elderly and disabled Americans, as a program that directly pays those bills.

That?s not the same as saying Ryan?s plan would put an end to a government plan for health insurance for seniors. His plan would have been a big change: He called for a ?premium-support? system, where the government would send payments, like subsidies, to private insurance companies that would compete for seniors? business on a Medicare exchange. He proposed implementing such a system for new beneficiaries beginning a decade in the future. The government would be paying insurance carriers, rather than directly paying health care bills.

While the Democratic claims haven?t changed in two years, Ryan?s plan has. His latest plans called for traditional Medicare to remain an option on his Medicare exchange.

As for the claim about some seniors paying thousands more under the Ryan plan, CBO did find, for the 2011 plan, that seniors with private plans would pay more than they would under the traditional Medicare system, and its analysis indicated that in 2022, a 65-year-old would pay about $6,000 more. The subsidies under that plan were set to increase with the rate of inflation.

But Ryan?s subsequent plans upped the rate of increase. CBO has only said of the latest plan that ?beneficiaries might face higher costs,? but there was no more definitive estimate than that. Patriot Majority, however, hasn?t updated its attacks. It offers the same distortion it pushed a year ago.

The plan Ryan introduced in 2013, and the one Cotton voted in favor of, echoes his 2012 plan. The groups behind the ad point to a Dec. 15, 2011, tweet that Cotton sent from his personal account supporting Ryan?s Medicare plan: ?Medicare needs reform, and @RepPaulRyan has a bipartisan plan to fix it: http://bit.ly/sBZnL4. #ar4 #argop #tcot.? But that?s a reference to the plan Ryan was about to introduce in 2012, as evidenced by the link to a National Review article on that topic.

Here?s hoping there?s no Groundhog Day in the summer of 2014.

Whole genome or exome sequencing: An individual insight

June 26, 2013 ? Focusing on parts rather than the whole, when it comes to genome sequencing, might be extremely useful, finds research in BioMed Central's open access journal Genome Medicine. The research compares several sequencing technologies in the same individual with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT), and shows that sequencing the coding regions alone at high depth of coverage can identify the genetic variation behind this disease, and was also able to resolve previous ambiguities.

Next generation sequencing for understanding human DNA variation and genetic disorders is advancing in leaps and bounds. Whole genome sequencing reads all of an individual's DNA, whereas exome sequencing captures only the parts of the DNA which code for proteins. Exome sequencing is faster and cheaper, but concerns have previously been raised that it misses important information.

A team from Baylor College of Medicine led by Prof. James Lupski and Prof. Richard Gibbs compared several different exome and whole genome sequencing technologies on DNA from the same person with CMT. Prof. Jim Lupski explained, "Both methods were able to find the same 12 variants which affect cellular response to specific drugs such as betablockers, warfarin and the anti-cancer drug paclitaxel, and identify novel CMT-associated mutations in SH3TC2 that encodes for a protein with a role in peripheral nerve myelination."

Exome sequencing had fewer false positives, and a greater sensitivity due to the higher coverage achieved when focusing only in a small fraction of the genome. Consequently it was able to correctly identify nucleotides which were ambiguous when using whole genome sequencing at lower coverage, and so clarify whether they were associated with CMT or not.

Prof. Richard Gibbs commented, "The higher coverage afforded by focusing on the exome at approximately 120x for clinical exomes allows greater precision of exome sequencing making this a superior approach, rather than a shortcut, to find which people might respond to a particular therapy or to define who has a specific disease."

Tesco stops sourcing from a Bangladesh factory due to safety concerns

LONDON/DHAKA (Reuters) - Tesco, the world's No. 3 retailer, has stopped sourcing clothes from a factory in Bangladesh after discovering serious problems with the safety of the site, the company said on Saturday.

The move follows a survey the British-based supermarket chain conducted in the wake of the collapse of the Rana Plaza factory complex in Dhaka in April that killed 1,129 people.

"A structural survey of a site we source from in Bangladesh, owned by Liberty Fashions, has revealed serious problems with the safety of one of the buildings," Tesco said in a statement.

Mozammel Huq, the owner of Dhaka-based garment maker Liberty Fashion, told Reuters that the building, in an industrial zone near Dhaka, met the required building codes.

"I fully followed the building code, so the question does not arise that it is an unsafe building," Huq told Reuters by phone on Saturday.

"The building is almost new - one phase I built only five years ago and the other one eight years ago."

Tesco, which has promised to conduct structural surveys of all the factories it sources from, said it had stopped using 15 factories of concern in Bangladesh in the past 12 months.

It said it had urged the owners of the Liberty Fashions site to stop all production and to evacuate the premises to ensure the safety of its workers.

"We immediately made the owners aware of our findings, and tried to find an alternative to ceasing production of Tesco products on this site. We are disappointed that this was not possible. We are disappointed that this was not possible ...," it said in its statement.

"Our concerns about the structure of this building are so serious that we decided our only option was to stop taking clothes from this site with immediate effect."

The head of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), Mohammad Atiqul Islam, told Reuters that after Tesco's decision he had asked Huq to stop production at the factory if it was unsafe.

Huq in response had asked the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) to inspect the building for safety risk and had agreed to shut the factory if it was found to be unsafe and shift to a safe site, Islam said.

"He told us that they took the issue seriously and had already deposited the required money with the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology to examine the level of risk," Islam said.

Huq had put down 172,000 taka ($2,205) for the BUET inspection, Islam said.

SHORTCUTS ON SAFETY

Bangladesh has pledged to improve safety in the garment industry after the Rana Plaza collapse but has not pledged any new money to relocate dangerous buildings.

The collapse of Rana Plaza, a factory built on swampy ground outside Dhaka with several illegal floors, on April 24 ranks amongst the world's worst industrial accidents and has galvanized brands to look more closely at their suppliers.

Very low labor costs and, critics say, shortcuts on safety, makes the country of 160 million the cheapest place to make large quantities of clothing.

Companies are split over how to improve conditions. Big European names have signed an accord that would make them legally responsible for safety at Bangladesh factories. U.S. firms like Wal-Mart Stores Inc have broken ties with non-compliant factories.
