Spain, Portugal hit with anti-austerity protests - World News

Protestors shout slogans as they fill up Neptuno Square during a demonstration against government austerity measures in Madrid.

By NBC News wire services

MADRID ? Tens of thousands of Spaniards and Portuguese rallied in the streets of their countries? capitals Saturday to protest enduring deep economic pain from austerity cuts.

In Madrid, demonstrators approached parliament for the third time this week to vent their anger against tax hikes, government spending cuts and the highest unemployment rate among the 17 nations that use the euro currency.

The boisterous crowds in the Spanish capital let off ear-splitting whistles near parliament and yelled ??Fire them, fire them!?? -- referring to the conservative government of Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy.

Rajoy?s administration presented a 2013 draft budget on Friday that will cut overall spending by 40 billion euros ($51.7 billion), freezing the salaries of public workers, cutting spending for unemployment benefits and even reducing spending for Spain?s royal family next year by 4 percent.

Pablo Rodriguez, a 24-year-old student doing a master?s in agricultural development in Denmark, said the austerity measures and bad economy mean most of his friends in Spain are unemployed or doing work they didn?t train for.

Andres Kudacki / AP

A picture of Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy is seen during the demonstration in Madrid.

Spain's unemployment rate is almost 25 percent, and more than half of people under 24 are jobless.

??I would love to work here, but there is nothing for me here,?? Rodriguez said. ??By the time the economy improves it will be too late. I will be settled somewhere else with a family. One of the disasters in Spain is they spent so much to educate me and so many others and they will lose us.??

He doubts he will put his education to use in Spain until he is 35 or 40, if ever, will probably get job abroad and stay.

In Lisbon, retired banker Antonio Trinidade said the budget cuts Portugal is locked into in return for the nation?s ?78 billion ($101 billion) bailout are making the country?s economy the worst he has seen in his lifetime. His pension has been cut, and he said countless young Portuguese are increasingly heading abroad because they can?t make a living at home.

??The government and the troika controlling what we do because of the bailout just want to cut more and more and rob from us,?? Trinidade said, referring to the troika of creditors -- the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund. ??The young don?t have any future, and the country is on the edge of an abyss. I'm getting toward the end of my life, but these people in their 20s or 30s don?t have jobs, or a future.??

In Spain, Rajoy has an absolute majority and has pushed through waves of austerity measures over the last nine months -- trying to prevent Spain from being forced into the same kind of bailouts taken by Portugal, Ireland and Greece.

The protests near Spain?s parliament turned violent Tuesday and Wednesday nights when protesters clashed with riot police, who barricaded entry to the streets surrounding government buildings. Dozens of people were arrested and injured.

Investors worried about Spain?s economic viability have forced up the interest rate they are willing to pay to buy Spanish bonds. The country?s banks hurting from a property boom that went bust are set to get help soon from a ?100 billion ($129 billion) financial lifeline from the eurozone, and Rajoy is pondering whether to ask for help from the ECB to buy Spanish bonds.

Finance Minister Cristobal Montoro said Saturday that the budget cuts for next year were necessary to ease market tensions and try to bring down high interest rates Spain must pay to get investors to buy its bonds.

Eastern Congo city sees rise in violence

GOMA, Congo (AP) ? Authorities in Goma say five people were killed this week in shootouts linked to the increase in Congolese army troops here.

Since the beginning of May, the Congolese army has been fighting against a new group of rebels called M23. Thousands of troops were deployed to reinforce the army forces fighting the rebels.

The rise in troops around Goma has increased insecurity in the provincial capital. Residents report gunfire in the city virtually every night.

In the past week several people were killed, spreading fear throughout the city. Local authorities have instructed people to stay home after dark and the streets of Goma have become eerily quiet after 7 p.m.

A Congolese army spokesman denies the troops are to blame for the increase in violence in Goma.

Top of the Morning: Kenyan Troops Route Al Shabaab; Sudan and South Sudan Sign Accord; Bibi?s Cartoon Bomb

Top stories from DAWNS Digest.?

Kenyan Troops Reportedly Route Al Shabaab from its Last Somali Stronghold

The city of Kismayo, long under control of Al Shabaab militias, has been taken over by Kenyan troops. ?Initial reports indicated there had been no heavy fighting. For the past several weeks, Kenyan fighter jets and naval ships have been pounding Kismayu, steadily taking out Shabab positions and preparing the ground for a final assault. According to residents in the town, one of Somalia?s biggest, Shabab fighters had been quietly fleeing, avoiding a showdown with the much better armed Kenyan military. A Shabab-maintained Twitter account, however, said Shabab fighters are still in Kismayu. ?KDF cowards attempt to attack Kismayu from the sea but the courageous mujahedeen thwart their attempts,? said a message late Friday morning. ?Kismayu remains firmly in the hands of the mujahedeen, stay tuned for updates.? Kenya?s involvement in Somalia is the most aggressive step it has ever taken against another country. Publicly, Kenyan officials said they needed to invade Somalia to protect their borders and the first troops rolled in last year. Privately, they acknowledged that Somalia?s relentless chaos was hindering Kenya?s fast-growing economy, and control of the coastline would allow Kenya to move ahead with an ambitious plan to build a new port on the Indian Ocean, not far from the Somali border. It was not clear what is going to happen next. Kismayu has been a complicated place to rule, with several major clans competing for influence and significant port fees to fight over. Also, though the Shabab seem to have formally withdrawn from the town, they have vowed to go underground and use insurgent tactics to fight their enemies.? ?(NYT http://nyti.ms/QKeIo9)

Sudan and South Sudan Sign Economic and Political Accord

Still, most analysts seem to think that this agreement will have very little effect on the ground. ?On Thursday, Mr. Bashir and Mr. Kiir emerged to announce that they would demilitarize the border ? a step that had been agreed to in principle last year but was almost instantly violated when Sudan began a brutal counterinsurgency campaign in the Nuba Mountains, near the border. The two sides also committed to resuming cross-border trade and allowing citizens from each side to move freely. And they agreed to resume oil production ? again, an issue that had been previously covered, with a deal reached in August, but had not yet taken effect because of mutual mistrust. ?This basically kicks the can down the road,? said EJ Hogendoorn, the Horn of Africa director for the International Crisis Group, a conflict-prevention organization. ?Oil production will give both governments some breathing room, since their economies were collapsing, but unless there is a resolution to Abyei? ?and other conflict-ridden parts of Sudan, he said in an e-mail, ?enormous frictions remain.? One person close to the talks tried to put a positive gloss on them, saying the negotiating session was a ?crunch summit? and the border deal was ?serious progress.? But most analysts disagree.? Benjamin Netanyahu?s UN Speech: Red Lines and a Cartoon Bomb

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gave a stirring address to the UN General Assembly warning about the dangers of an Iranian nuclear weapon, and obliquely calling on President Obama to set a firm ?redline? on the nuclear program. Alas, his argument may have been undermined by the cartoonish prop he brought along. ?Netanyahu told the U.N. General Assembly that unless stopped by the international community, Iran could have enough enriched uranium for a nuclear weapon by next summer. He did not threaten to attack Iran, and he said that the United States and Israel are pursuing a united effort to stop the Islamic Republic from developing a weapon. Near the end of his speech, Netanyahu held up a placard showing a cartoon-like bomb that divided Iran?s efforts into three stages. He said that Iran has completed the first stage, developing sufficient low-enriched uranium, and that it is nearing completion of the second stage, the further enrichment of the uranium to weapons grade. He said that stage could be completed as soon as next summer and that the third stage, preparing an actual weapon, could then be accomplished within ?a few months, possibly a few weeks. He said the effort to build a detonator for the highly enriched uranium would be relatively simple and easily concealed. Drawing a bright red line across the picture with a marker, he said that Iran must be stopped before it completes the second stage. ?I believe that faced with a clear red line, Iran will back down,? Netanyahu said in the 30-minute address.? (WaPo http://wapo.st/OY791q)

People Are Calling For This Apple Executive's Head - Business Insider

Who's to blame for Apple's disappointing Maps experience?

Fingers are pointing at Apple iOS software Vice President, Scott Forstall, and some say he should be fired over the mess.

Fortune's Philip Elmer-DeWitt asks, "Does Apple have a Scott Forstall problem?"

Forstall eloquently introduced Apple Maps to the world at its conference a few weeks ago. There was no mention of the service having any limitations.

Former Apple executive and venture capitalist Jean-Louis Grassee writes of the deception:

"[Forstall's] demo was flawless, 2D and 3D maps, turn-by-turn navigation, spectacular flyovers? but not a word from the stage about the app's limitations, no self-deprecating wink, no admission that iOS Maps is an infant that needs to learn to crawl before walking, running, and ultimately lapping the frontrunner, Google Maps. Instead, we're told that Apple's Maps may be 'the most beautiful, powerful mapping service ever.'"

Maps isn't Forstall's first let down either. Last year he unveiled Siri on the iPhone 4S, another Apple embarrassment. But at least Siri was clearly label "beta."

Other reports say Forstall has issues internally at Apple too. Last year Bloomberg Businessweek reported that he doesn't get along well with other Apple executives; designer Jony Ive and Bob Mansfiled avoid meeting with Forstall unless Apple's president Tim Cook is there.

"He routinely takes credit for collaborative successes and defelcts blame for mistakes," Bloomberg wrote of Forstall.

But then Forstall has done a lot for Apple. He's been at the company for nearly two decades and joined the company when NeXT was acquired in 1997. He was one of the original architects of the Mac OS X operating system and has headed up iPhone and iPad software since 2006. In that same Bloomberg article he was dubbed "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" under Steve Jobs. He's long been considered Apple's "CEO-in-Waiting."

Is it fair to blame Forstall for everything and are Apple Maps really that big a deal? Probably not. But some Apple fans are really upset.

A reader wrote to Elmer-DeWitt, "There's no excuse [for Apple Maps]. Quality control on Apple Maps had to have been terrible to not get this right. Bluntly, Scott Forstall should be fired over this mess."

UTSA coach will be on familiar turf for?WAC opener at New Mexico St.

UTSA running backs coach Polo Gutierrez has spent this week looking ahead to the Roadrunners' Western Athletic Conference opener against New Mexico State on Saturday.

But truth be told, Gutierrez also has reminisced a little. Considering how many times he's been asked how he feels about UTSA playing such a historic game against his alma mater, Gutierrez hasn't had much choice but to reflect on his career with the Aggies.

Born in Laredo but raised in Corpus Christi, Leopoldo "Polo" Gutierrez was a three-year starting offensive lineman at NM State from 2006-08 after playing nose guard on defense as a freshman in 2005.

The Roadrunners?(4-0) and Aggies (1-3) meet?at 7 p.m. Saturday at Aggie Memorial Stadium in Las Cruces, N.M.?

"It's our first WAC game," Gutierrez said. "Of course, it's special because we are?going back to my?alma mater."

Gutierrez said he took his share of ribbing from UTSA's running backs this week, especially when he showed up for the first day of practice with his hair freshly cut.

"They all tell me, 'You got a short, high and tight haircut. Coach is all business this week,'" Gutierrez said, chuckling. "They understand how important the game is."

NM State hasn't gone to bowl since 1960

UTSA heads into its league opener brimming with confidence after rolling to a 56-3 rout of Division II Northwestern Oklahoma State last Saturday. New Mexico beat New Mexico State 27-14 a few hours later, handing the Aggies their third consecutive loss.

Winning seasons have been few and far between for NM State, which hasn't been to a bowl since 1960. The bowl drought is the longest among teams in the NCAA's Football Bowl Subdivision, formerly Division I-A.

The Aggies have recorded only four winning seasons since 1967, when they finished 7-2-1 under former Trinity coach Warren Woodson.

A 2005 Corpus Christi Carroll graduate, Gutierrez played on NM State teams that went a combined 11-38 under San Antonio native Hal Mumme. The Aggies were 0-12 in Gutierrez's freshman year and never won more than four games in one season during his career.

Of course, none of that will matter when NM State plays UTSA. The Aggies' losing record notwithstanding, the Roadrunners know they will face a challenge Saturday night.

On the other hand, NM State knows its season could be lost if it falls?to UTSA, which was picked to finish last in the WAC.

"All the pressure's on them," Gutierrez said. "Their coach (DeWayne Walker) said, 'We have a chance to be 2-3 after this week.' They think it's a game they can win. We know we can win it, but we have to play mistake-free football. These guys (Aggies) play really tough.

"But our guys, they don't really look at film and think that guys are better than them. I don't know if it's just the young mentality, but they don't know any better. They think they can beat anybody. We could march USC in there and they still would think they could beat them."

Gutierrez keeps in touch with college coach

Gutierrez, 25, was assistant strength and conditioning coach at NM State in 2009 before joining Coker's staff later that year as a volunteer coach.

Gutierrez worked as a volunteer for about six months before he became a graduate assistant, and was promoted to a full-time position as running backs coach in December 2010.

"It's been a blessing," Gutierrez said.

Gutierrez said he talks with Mumme, now head coach at McMurry in Abilene,?by phone about once a month.

"He gives me a lot of pointers," Gutierrez said. "He's even called me and wished me good luck on this one."

Gutierrez said Mumme and Coker have been his mentors and? have been "tremendous" in helping him develop as a coach.

Gutierrez is also a good friend of former NM?State standout quarterback Charley Johnson, who went on to play in the NFL and??retired this year as a professor of chemical engineering at his alma mater.

Johnson, who?earned Sun Bowl MVP honors in 1959 and 1960, is the only player in the history of the Aggies' football program who has had his number retired. He was the quarterback of the last NM State team to play in a bowl game.

"He can't make the game because his daughter is sick with cancer, but he was going to be on our sidelines," Gutierrez said. "He's?a good fan of ours and it?was going to be nice support for him to be there."

Roadrunners?had to?grow up quickly?

UTSA is making?the transition to the FBS?this season after?finishing its inaugural season 4-6 last year. The Roadrunners, who played as an independent in the FCS (formerly I-AA) last season, will move to Conference USA next year.

Gutierrez has been involved with UTSA football from nearly the beginning, helping Coker run football camps for kids and tryouts for prospective players.

"From where they were two years ago to where they are now is night and day," Gutierrez said, referring to UTSA's players. "We had a lot of growing up to do and we had to do it?very fast. That was the main thing.

"It went from thinking we were going to be D-I, Double-A, and eventually D-I when these guys were seniors to all of sudden, you're in the WAC. I tell the guys that I played in the WAC and I know what it's about. The WAC is still extremely competitive."

That said, Gutierrez said the Roadrunners have players who can "easily compete in this league."

While UTSA won't be eligible for a bowl until 2014, Gutierrez said the Roadrunners don't lack for incentive.

"More than anything, what I tell these guys is, 'What are you competing for this year? Are you competing for a bowl game? No. What you're competing for is a conference championship ring,'" Gutierrez said. "That's what you can have this year. If you get in there and do what's right, you can win the WAC and be able to win the last WAC championship in history."

The WAC announced in August that it will drop football after this season.

When WAC football passes into history, Gutierrez?still will have his memories of the league.?

And so will UTSA. ?

Supersizing the sandwich generation | Inheritance ... - Financial Post

About one-quarter of the so-called sandwich generation already has a second slice on top since they care for two or more seniors.

Balancing the demands of family life for today?s parents can be difficult at the best of times. Times are even tougher for many a parent suddenly tasked with the responsibility of caring for their own parents as well. These people make up the sandwich generation ? those raising their children and simultaneously looking after their parents.

But today?s changing demographics ? many of them highlighted in census data released recently by Statistics Canada ? are resulting in a sort of super-sizing of the sandwich generation.

There are incentives to consider the option of moving Mom and Dad into your home or moving your family into their home

The increase in rates of senior or ?grey? divorce means higher odds of caring for divorced parents and maybe even their new partners. As if caring for your married parents isn?t tough enough, we might see a generation of Baby Boomers providing elder care for parents in multiple locations.

About one-quarter of the so-called sandwich generation already has a second slice on top since they care for two or more seniors.

The trend towards having children at a later age also puts more people in the position of having to care for both children and parents. And since people are simply having fewer children period, there are less children to care for the growing ranks of the elderly.

The term ?sandwich generation? was coined by American social worker Dorothy Miller in 1981. A generation later, more than one-quarter of today?s Canadians aged 45-64 have children living with them and also perform some sort of elder care.

Since eight out of 10 in the sandwich generation are also working, it?s not surprising to see more and more retirement homes and nursing care options becoming available to provide the care they may not have the time to provide themselves. In some cases, it?s just not an option for the elderly to live on their own. That said, not all seniors have the resources to afford these facilities ? nor do all of their children.

Beyond the stress of physically caring for parents comes the stress of caring for their money

Statistics Canada reports the number of seniors living with relatives or non-relatives in a private dwelling increased from 285,370 to 393,150 from 2001 to 2011.

There are incentives to consider the option of moving Mom and Dad into your home or moving your family into their home. Selling your parents? home or your home could provide funds to use towards their care. It could also reduce the commuting costs of going back and forth from your home to theirs, since they are not likely to live close by.

And given that Statistics Canada reports that 15% of sandwiched workers have to reduce their work hours, having your parents in your home could mean more time to get the job done ? both your day job and your night job. After all, there are only so many hours in the day.

Beyond the stress of physically caring for parents comes the stress of caring for their money. And practically speaking, there are typically two different problems when it comes to Mom and Dad?s money ? they either have too little or too much.

Too little means they might become a financial burden on you. And if you have siblings, deciding how to split the cost of care can be a delicate subject. Should the cost be split equally? Should the oldest child step to the plate? Should the wealthiest child bear more of the burden? Or the one who makes more money? Or the one who got more financial support from their parents over the years?

Having too much money, while seemingly less of a problem, isn?t always so. One child may want to keep the funds intact in their parents? names, while others might push for an early advance of their inheritance. Beyond that, it?s common to see situations where strategies to move money from one generation to the next or to reduce taxes or probate defeat the original intention or lead to significant costs ? both financially and on family ties ? ranging from mistakes to disagreements to litigation.

The good news on the tax front is that the Canada Revenue Agency provides incentives to Canadians who are caring for elders. It?s possible a senior (or anyone, for that matter) may qualify for a tax credit called the ?disability amount? if they suffer from prolonged symptoms that inhibit their performance of the activities of daily living. Nursing home and caregiver costs may be claimed as medical expenses for another tax credit. And beyond that, there are additional tax credits for ?infirm dependents? as well as ?caregivers? depending on whether or not a senior lives with you or depends on you financially for support.

Having three generations under one roof is more common elsewhere in the world, but perhaps less so here in North America ? right now. One problem with this option is that it could raise an interesting dilemma ? that is, what if you take in your divorced parent and subsequently need to provide care to your other parent? Or maybe your parent has remarried and they require help as a couple? What if your parent passes away and their spouse still requires assistance? Maybe you inherit the house that the spouse is living in?

Odds are moving more in favour of being presented with such situation and Baby Boomers have some decisions to make in the not-so-distant future to ensure they can digest the double-decker sandwich they could soon be served.

Bosnia Warns Syria May Become 'New Srebrenica' :: Balkan Insight

Izetbegovic, Bosniak [Muslim] member of the country's tripartite presidency, told the UN General Assembly that the international community ?failed? to handle the crisis in eastern Bosnia in July 1995 - and was in danger of repeating the same error in Syria.

?The best way to honour the victims of Srebrenica is to learn from the mistakes. Unfortunately, the UN has failed to do that," he said.

"The international community has once again chosen the ?trial and error? policy, which failed in Bosnia,? Izetbegovic added.

?[The use of] resolutions, statements of concern, ineffectual sanctions, observers and lack of a clear mandate to protect civilians ? which result in deaths ? was demonstrated in my country," he recalled.

"Do not make this mistake. If we don't act now, decisively, to help the Syrian people and stop the bloodshed, this tragedy will haunt us, just like Srebrenica,? he continued.
?
Izetbegovic was referring to the mass slaughter of Bosniaks that occured under the noses of the UN in the besieged eastern Bosnian town of Srebrenica in July 1995.

Although the town was a UN-declared demilitarized zone, Bosnian Serb forces under General Ratko Mladic attacked and overran the town and killed more than 7,000 people.

The International Court of Justice in a ruling in 2007 qualified the massacre as an act of genocide.

At the time of the Bosnian Serb attack, a UN Dutch battalion was stationed in Srebrenica, but it did not stop the slaughter. ?

Izetbegovic said that all UN member states were obliged to help the Syrian people in their quest for freedom.

?Once more we stand idly by while a human tragedy is going on. We must save the Syrian people from tyranny. We must, but we do not," he said.

"The images we are seeing from Syria remind us of the Bosnian tragedy. We in Bosnia and Herzegovina feel the pain the Syrian people as our own, because we too went through the same horrors,? Izetbegovic added.

The Bosnian presidency member recalled that the former and current UN General Secretaries, Kofi Annan and Ban Ki-Moon, had visited Srebrenica to pay homage to the victims, and both men had said that such events should never be permitted in future. ?

?Today, these words ring with the sounds of the failure of this organization [the UN] to respond to the Syrian tragedy,? he maintained.

Speaking about the future of his own country, Izetbegovic stated that it was ?vital to protect the mosaic of ethnicities and cultures? in Bosnia.

?There is a great fight on now between the forces of reconciliation and division in my country today... [and] if the idea of reconciliation does not prevail in Bosnia, then it will have a hard time doing so anywhere else,? he concluded.

There is no settled international consensus on the desirability of direct intervention in the crisis in Syria.

While some Gulf states openly support rebel forces, the government in Damascus has retained strong support from China, Russia and Iran.

Fitness of a Formula One Driver : The Health Guru

Posted on | September 28, 2012 | No Comments

Formula One Fitness

Do you consider a F1 driver an elite athlete?? Do you think they are more or less fitter than a long distance runner?

I guess that needing to drive some of the fastest cars in demanding conditions (both physical and mental) must need for them to train vigorously. Let?s take a look at what their body goes through:

The heart

Most?humans?have a resting heart rate of around 60 beats/minute, rising to around 150 during a run on the treadmill. An experiment using David Coulthard found he had a resting heart rate of 40 beats/minute, rising to 198 beats/minute during a two hour race.? That figure is approximately the same as a marathon runner when crossing the finishing line.? One of the reasons for this is that driving demands intense concentration, huge amounts of adrenalin?is being pumped through the body, the physical strain of travelling at speeds more than 300km per hour and experiencing g-forces of 3-4 around corners indeed makes the heart beat faster!

Training: To cope with the stress on the heart, F1 drivers would need to conduct intense cardiovascular exercise.

The neck

The total weight of a human head and a F1 helmet weigh approximately 6kg. When taking corners and experiencing about 4G-Force, the neck has to support 24kg.

Training:? Large elastic bands are used to simulate the demands of high G-Force. Drivers also incorporate resistance work into their exercise regime ? rowing and weight lifting.? But keeping in mind they need to avoid too much muscle hypertrophy in order to fit within the small driving cockpits.

Diet

Formula One drivers eat much like track and field athletes ? carefully regulating their carbohydrate and protein intake. In the lead up to a big race they?ll gorge on carbohydrates for energy.? Immediately before the race and sometimes throughout, drivers?drink huge amounts of water. Failure to do so could bring on dehydration through sweating.? The extreme heat found in a Formula One cockpit means drivers can sweat off up to 3 kg of their body weight during the course of a race.

Mental health

Formula One drivers don?t just take care of their bodies, they look after their mental health too. Many of the F1 Teams work with sports psychologists to ensure that a driver can exert unwavering mind control during a race. Methods include reviewing track maps, visualising a route and a perfect lap, in order for the driver to feel he has driven the course many times before he even arrives there.

Drivers also learn breathing techniques to stay calm at crucial moments, and techniques for shutting out the outside world ? a driver getting into a car surrounded by a medical team, technical staff and thousands of fans and members of the press may use the click of the seat belt as a trigger to block these distractions.

So now do you think that a F1 driver is an elite athlete?? I am certainly convinced.

Second generation Razer Blade hands-on

Razer Blade 20 handson

Razer's second attempt at a gaming laptop is just as sleek as its first try, and even more powerful. The second generation Razer Blade -- Razer Blade 2.0, we're calling it -- packs some serious hardware: an unannounced Core i7 processor, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660M graphics (a big step up from last year's GT 555M inclusion), 8GB of 1600MHz DDR3 RAM, a 500GB 7200RPM hard drive, and 64GB of solid state storage. All that hardware is stuffed in a nigh identical aluminum chassis to the first edition, with a 17.3-inch high def screen and the infamous multitouch LCD Switchblade interface (read: that bizarre little touch screen built into the keyboard). And all this for the low, low price of ... nearly $2,500. Yikes.

For the savvy, independently wealthy gamer on the go, however, little else on the market compares to Razer's Blade laptop. The second generation focuses on beefing up the tech specs from last year, and that's immediately apparent with the inclusion of the Kepler-grade GTX 660M. Not much else is changed in the hardware department otherwise, with the exception of the USB slots all being upgraded to 3.0 -- the same LCD touch panel display sits on the right side of the keyboard, and its been bolstered with a new software suite.

Phoenix filmmaker jailed in grenade launcher hoax

PHOENIX (AP) ? A Phoenix man has been accused of dressing his 16-year-old nephew in a sheet and sending him into a busy street with a fake grenade launcher, then filming the masked teenager pointing the faux weapon at passing cars.

Authorities said it was all to see how fast city police would react to a mock terrorist act.

Michael D. Turley was arrested Monday, nearly two months after the bizarre film was posted to YouTube. He posted $5,000 bond and was released.

In the film, the narrator who police identified as Turley, said he wanted to see how long it took authorities to respond. The introduction to the video mentions the July 20 theater shooting in Aurora, Colo., that killed 12.

"Given this event, I wanted to run a little test here in Phoenix, Arizona," Turley said. "I want to find out how safe I really am, and I want to know the response time of the Phoenix police department."

The YouTube clip showed the masked teen marching back and forth at an intersection with the rocket-propelled grenade launcher on his shoulder.

The first officer found Turley and the teen in a neighborhood, standing in Turley's driveway.

The officer calmly told the boy to put down the weapon and Turley to put down the camera. He didn't draw his gun.

Officer James Holmes, a police spokesman, said Turley told the officer they were just filming a movie, and the officer took down their names and left.

After interviewing people who called 911 and later seeing the video posted on YouTube, police arrested Turley.

"It surprised us that he actually put that video on YouTube," Holmes said.

The police response took just over three minutes from the first call, and a helicopter and SWAT team was dispatched as backup, Holmes said.

Turley, 39, doesn't have a listed phone number. He didn't immediately respond to messages sent Wednesday through the YouTube account.

Police said Turley was charged with creating a false impression of a terrorist act, endangerment, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and misconduct involving simulated explosives.

Holmes said police are recommending charges of endangerment and knowingly giving a false impression of a terrorist act for a juvenile court to decide whether to file against the teen, whose name was not released because he is a minor.

The Regret Fallacy [Decision Making]

The Regret FallacyDying with regrets is a common fear. When making decisions, it's normal to wonder how we'll feel about our choices five, ten, even fifty years later. As Dan Shipper explains, reframing the way we think about choices is key to living without regret.

Even though I'm in college I still take a class with my old high school history teacher. No grades are given, and class takes place sporadically on the weeks when I'm back home in Princeton.

Many teachers dislike when students bring food to their classrooms and eat while they lecture. In this class, food is a requirement and lectures are held at the Panera by my house. Most classes become unbearable to sit through after about an hour and a half. Students start wriggling around in their seats, and coughing loudly. The clock starts to move more slowly and the view outside the window suddenly becomes captivating. In this class, though, the hours seem to melt away almost imperceptibly. This is a class I hope I never graduate from.

Mr. Figueroa is probably the smartest person in any room he walks into. He's also the type of person that doesn't seem to know it. Or if he does, he doesn't let it on.

He's 40ish and married with two kids. He grew up in Puerto Rico, and moved to the US after he was accepted to Princeton for college. Eventually he ended up staying at Princeton as a professor. Back in those days, his students probably called him Professor Figueroa. These days he teaches high school history. Everyone calls him Fig. And that's the way he likes it. Most of his classes center around religion, or philosophy, politics or history. Today's class, however, is on regret.

"The older I get the more consequences each decision seems to have. It feels like everything has more weight. Like staying in school. What if by staying in school instead of dropping out I missed my opportunity to build a big company?" I begin. Fig is listening intently, hands folded in his lap. "How do I live with myself if that's what happens?"

"Do you feel like you regret staying in school?" The thing about Fig is that no question is innocent. One question leads to another, which leads to another, until he's asked you so many questions that the answer becomes clear to you. Very rarely does he need to do any explaining himself.

"Most days I don't. But at least for me it's sometimes easy get stuck on ?what ifs'. And sometimes it's difficult to get rid of. I read somewhere that you end regretting the things that you don't do, rather than the things that you do. That kind of stuck with me."

"Let's think about that. You end up regretting the things that you don't do, rather than the things that you do. Explain that to me a little more." Fig replies leaning back in his chair.

"Well the idea is if you go and ask senior citizens what they regret, most of the regrets start with ?I wish had pursued my music career' or ?Or I really missed out on hanging out with my kids'. So most of their regrets come from times when they decided not do to do something."

"But isn't every decision not to do something, also a decision to do something else in disguise? So when the senior citizen said ?I wish I had pursued my music career' couldn't that just as easily have been rephrased as ?I wish I hadn't become an accountant'?"

"I guess," I say thinking hard.

"So ?You regret the decisions you don't make' seems like a pretty vacuous distinction doesn't it?"

"Well when you put it that way it does, I guess. But if it is a meaningless distinction then there's no easy way to figure out which decision to make when you're faced with one."

"Sounds about right," he replies with a wry smile.

"This is not helpful," I say shaking me head and laughing to myself.

"Every single person that has regrets, has them with the benefit of hindsight. But you don't have the benefit of hindsight when you're making your decision do you?"

I shake my head, no.

"So it makes no sense to judge a decision you made without the benefit of hindsight and let it affect your emotional state. When you make these types of decisions, and you make them carefully, sometimes you'll choose right and sometimes you'll choose wrong. All you can do is always make the best decision given the facts at hand. If you're lucky you'll learn your lesson from the wrong decisions and correct them. But other than that you can't beat yourself up about these kinds of things. It's just not useful." Fig takes a bite of his sandwich. "The other thing is, regretting a pivotal decision basically means you want an entirely new life."

"What do you mean?" I say.

"Well let's say you regret going to Penn instead of Princeton," he starts.

"That's one thing I definitely don't regret."

"Alright, well for the sake of argument let's say you do. In your imagination you're thinking, if I went to Princeton my life would be exactly the same except that at the top of all my resumes I could write ?Princeton Class of 2014' and I could go to Princeton reunions and hang out with all of the high fliers." Another pause for a bite of his sandwich.

"But what you're not thinking about is that if you went to Princeton instead of Penn, by doing so you'd have to give up every single moment from the time you decided to go to Penn until now. Everything. Every friend you've made, every class you've taken, every website you've worked on, every lesson you've learned. You're a completely different person if you choose differently on a decision like that."

"Ok, I see that."

"And so the only time you ever regret a decision, is if you'd rather give up every single part of your life from then until now. Now, thinking about it that way, do you regret not leaving school?

"No."

"And that, my friend, is the regret fallacy."

Hilchos Uminhagei Yom Kippur 5773 - Yeshiva World News

The following is meant as a convenient review of Halachos pertaining to Rosh Yom-Kippur. The Piskei Din for the most part are based purely on the Sugyos, Shulchan Aruch and Ramah, and the Mishna Berura, unless stated otherwise. They are based on my understanding of the aforementioned texts through the teachings of my Rebeim. As individual circumstances are often important in determining the psak in specific cases, and as there may be different approaches to some of the issues, one should always check with one?s Rov first.

Rabbi Krakowski Serves as the OU Kashrut division?s Rabbinical Representative in Israel. He serves as a Posek in the Megido-Towers and Shaarei Chesed Neighborhoods in Jerusalem. Rabbi Krakowski has been mishamesh many Rabbonim and Poskim both In America and in Eretz-Yisroel. Rabbi Krakowski started his Yeshiva years in Beis Hamedrash and Mesivta of Baltimore. He Then continued in Yeshivas Shaar HaTorah Grodna (Queens NY), South Fallsburg, Brisk (Yerushalayim), and currently still learns in Kollel Nachlos Elazar (Yerushalayim).

Hilchos Uminhagei Yom Kippur:

  1. There is a prevalent Minhag to do Kaparos on Erev Yom Kippur.? Kaparos are traditionally done with live chickens. There are those who are Noheg to do Kaparos with money instead of live chickens.
    1. The idea behind Kaparos is that the chickens/money is meant as a symbolic atonement (kaparah) for the person ? should one be deserving of the death penalty (even Misa Beyedei Shamayim)? the chicken (which is then shechted and given to Tzedaka), or the money, symbolically takes the place of the transgressor.
    2. Men and boys use roosters while women and girls use Hens. Expecting women take two ? a rooster and a hen (even if they know that they are having a girl)
    3. One must be careful, when doing Kaparos with chickens not to do it in a way that will cause excessive pain to the chicken, and one should try not to cause the chicken to become a treifa.
    4. Most Jews of Hungarian or Polish descent do Kaparos on chickens, while Jews of German and Lithuanian origin either do it on money or not at all. Sephardim have varying Minhagim.

i.????? The Shulchan Aruch writes against doing Kaparos, and the Gra also is opposed to Kaparos.? The Rama however strongly defends Kaparos, and explains that it is an ancient custom dating back to the Gaonim (others say even before the time of the Geonim).

  1. If one is not Noheg to do Kaparos then perhaps he shouldn?t start. Those who, however, are accustomed to do Kaparos certainly should not stop.
  2. While doing the Kaparos there are various tefilos and psukim one should say, these are printed in most siddurim and machzorim.
  3. On Erev Yom-Kippur one should go to the Mikvah.
    1. All adult men should dip in the mikva.

i.????? As this is mostly for reasons of purity there is little reason for boys who have not physically matured yet to go to the Mikva.

ii.????? There are those that maintain that the purpose for going to the mikva isn?t only for purity reasons, but rather something one should do before doing Teshuva. According to this opinion, it then stands to reason that boys over nine should go to the mikva.

  1. There is an issur for a son to see his father undressed. This issur is for tznius reasons and not for Kibud Av reasons ? thus a father cannot be mochel and allow his son to see him undressed.
  2. The aforementioned issur extends to brothers-in-law, fathers-in- law, and grandfathers.
    1. Since children who aren?t of age to understand the Teshuva process have no reason to go to the Mikvah, and since there also an additional prohibition for them to see their fathers undressed, young boys should not be brought to the mikva.

iii.????? When getting undressed before immersing in the mikve one should remove their underpants last unless they are wearing an undershirt (the bottom layer shirt) that covers their mila (see Meseches Derech Eretz Rabba and Zuta)

  1. There are those that maintain that women, and girls who already understand Teshuva (9+), should go to the mikva as well.

i.????? In most Ashkenazi communities this is not commonly done, and one should therefore not start to do so on one?s own.

ii.????? In some Chasidishe communities there are many that are Noheg that married women go to the Mikva.

  1. The old minhag in Yerushalayim is for women and girls over nine to go to the mikva Erev Yom-Kippur.

iii.????? Amongst the Sephardim there are those that are noheg that women and girls (9+) go to the mikva.

  1. The prevalent Minhag is to go after Chatzos, but before the Seuda Hamafsekes.

i.????? One shouldn?t go before Chatzos, unless there is no other option.

ii.????? It is ok to go after the Seuda Hamafsekes.

  1. Aveilim even during Shiva go to the Mikva Erev Yom-Kippur.
  2. There is a Mitzvah to eat Erev Yom-Kippur.
    1. The Mitzvah exists during the entire day.
    2. One may not fast on Erev-Yom-Kippur.
    3. One must eat at least the seudas Hamafsekes.

i.????? There is a largely accepted minhag to eat two seudos Erev Yom-Kippur: one in the morning and one in the afternoon.

ii.????? One should eat meat for the Seudas Hamafsekes.

  1. There are those that eat Dairy for the morning meal, but many are noheg to eat meat for both.
  2. If one ate the Seuda Hamafsekes and then wishes to eat or drink more after the Seuda, that person should make a stipulation to that effect before or while he is still eating the Seuda Hamafsekes.

i.????? If one didn?t make a verbal stipulation, but did intend to eat after the Seuda Hamafsekes, there is no problem and one can continue eating.

ii.????? If one didn?t stipulate or intend to eat (i.e. didn?t give any thought as to whether or not one wished to eat again) it is advisable not to eat.? If, however, there is a significant reason for eating more, one can do so.

iii.????? ?If one thought that he was not going to eat more, then even if one didn?t verbally say so, one should refrain from eating. If there is a need to eat, one can do so.

iv.????? If one actually said that he was not going to eat again then one may not eat again until after the fast.

  1. Although it is a Mitzva to eat Erev Yom Kippur, we must stop eating some time before the fast begins, as we are obligated to add onto the Kedushas Hayom.
  2. Mincha Erev Yom Kippur:
    1. Mincha occurs prior to the Seuda Hamafsekes.
    2. It is preferable that one daven Mincha in Yom-Tov garb.
    3. It is brought down in the Shulchan Aruch that one should get tapped lightly (symbolic ??lashes??) 39 times with a belt after Mincha.

i.????? Many people do not do put this into practice.

ii.????? These ??lashes?? don?t have a din of Makos (halachic ?lashes?).

iii.????? While one is receiving these ?lashes? one should say viduy.

iv.????? The person giving the ?lashes? should say Vehu Rachum etc. three times.

v.????? The person giving the ?lashes? should be extra careful not to hurt the person receiving the ?lashes?.

vi.????? Prior to receiving ?lashes? Mechila should be given for the humiliation involved in receiving the ?lashes?. As these ?lashes? should be a far cry from anything that would hurt the one receiving them, there is no need to be mochel one for one?s potentially getting hurt.

  1. Seuda Hamafsekes is eaten after Mincha, and should be a lavish Yom-Tov style meal.
    1. One should refrain from eating nuts at this Seuda (particularly almonds)
    2. We don?t eat foods with garlic, nor do we eat dairy products.
    3. There are those that have a minhag to eat stuffed cabbage and/or Creplach.

i.????? If one has these Minhagim it is good to keep to them, but they are not of importance and there is no reason to start.

  1. All foods eaten during the Seuda should be foods that are easy on the stomach and digestive system.
  2. We arenoheg to light a yartzeit-size candle for all married adult man.
    1. A yartzeit-size candle should be placed in the bedroom when a husband and wife will be sleeping in the same room.

i.????? In reality an electric night-light would suffice, but since the minhag is a yartzeit candle it is best not to veer from the minhag.

  1. If there is danger in using a candle then a night-light may be used.
  2. We are also noheg that a yartzeit candle should be lit for each deceased parent.

i.????? The yartzeit candle for a deceased parent shouldn?t be used for Havdala nor should another candle be lit from it.

  1. We light candles as on Shabbos and we recite the bracha of lehadlik ner shel yom-hakipurim, and Shehechiyanu.
    1. On years that Yom-Kippur falls out on Shabbos as does this year?s ? we say shel Shabbos veyom hakipurim.
    2. A woman who lights candles and then goes to shul should not make Shehechiyanu together with everyone else as she already did so when lighting.
    3. We are noheg to cover the table as on Shabbos ? with Shabbos table-cloths.

Yom Kippur:

On Yom Kippur it is forbidden to eat and drink, to wash, to anoint, to wear leather shoes, and to be intimate. In this section we will discuss the particulars of the aforementioned.

?

  1. It is forbidden to eat or drink even the smallest amount; however, while eating a very small amount is only a prohibition, to eat more than a shiur (minimum halachic amount) is a Chiyuv Karress. Therefore, under extenuating circumstances we are more lenient to allow eating and drinking in small amounts (less than the halachic minimum amount) at halachically stipulated intervals.
    1. Someone who might need to eat or drink on Yom-Kippur should discuss these exact measured amounts (Shiurim) and time intervals with a competent Rov.
    2. If one wasn?t planning on doing Shiurim, or wasn?t able to ask a Rov then one should try to wait nine minutes between each eating, or between each drinking.

i.????? Each drinking should be about a small shot glass (like the disposable kind).

ii.????? Each eating should be a similar volume.

  1. Each time a person eats is still an issur therefore one shouldn?t use more Shiurim than nescesary.

i.????? Any type of food may be eaten or drunk when one is doing Shiurim; however, as the number of times one eats or drinks in this manner should be minimized, it?s best that the substance being drunk be hydrating, and the food satiating.

  1. Different types of foods can be combined to form a shiur, and so too are different types of drinks. Drinks and food, however, cannot be combined to form a shiur together.
  2. One doing Shiurim (or who ate/drank less than a shiur) shouldn?t be a shliach tzibur in any capacity. This includes getting an Aliya.

i.????? If one received an Aliya, the Aliya counts and it is OK to accept it.

  1. It is forbidden to wash oneself whatsoever. This includes washing any part of one?s body ? whether in cold or hot water. Since the main prohibition is washing in a way that provides a certain pleasure, exceptions to the rule are made during Yom Kippur in the following situations in which washing is allowed:
    1. Netilas Yadayim in the morning ? until the knuckles.
    2. To wash one?s hands after touching a body part generally covered, scratching one?s scalp, or touching one?s shoe etc. One should also wash hands after using the bathroom even if one?s hands remained clean.
    3. If any body part became dirty. If one requires soap to wash off the dirt one may use a watered down liquid soap to do so.
    4. Even if a women?s Lel-Tevila comes out on Yom Kippur she may not be Tovel until after Yom-Kippur.
    5. One cannot anoint oneself whenever this is done so for the sake of pleasure. This includes cosmetic or minor topical health issues. One can apply ointment to an infection.
      1. One can apply whatever ointments might be necessary to heal a skin infection.
      2. Although some maintain that it is permissible to put on aerosol deodorants on Yom-Kippur, one should avoid doing so by applying a good deodorant Erev-Yom-Kippur.

i.????? One cannot apply perfume or cologne on Yom-Kippur, even according to Poskim who may allow it on Shabbos. Likewise no form of makeup may be applied on Yom-Kippur.

  1. According to the Shulchan Aruch and the traditional Poskim all non-leather shoes may be worn no matter the comfort or style of the shoe; this includes non-leather sneakers and crocks.
    1. Originally some Poskim were opposed to synthetic leather shoes for reasons of Maras Ayin. Since nowadays people are used to the fact that there are many shoes made of synthetic leathers, it seems that it is permissible to wear such shoes.
    2. There is a machlokes Harishonim regarding real shoes fabricated from non-leather substances (see Rosh and Rambam). Some of the Rishonim maintain that all shoes that are commonly worn outdoors are considered shoes regarding the prohibition of shoe wearing on Yom-Kippur. According to these opinions the only footwear permitted would be flip-flop-like sandals or flimsy house slippers etc. This is not the view of the Shulchan Aruch nor is it the common Mesorah.

i.????? There are many Chasidim and Anshei Maaseh who refrain from wearing any footwear.

  1. Some people only wear more substantial footwear outside, but inside refrain from almost all footwear.
  2. If one only has leather shoes and needs to walk somewhere that would require him to wear such shoes, he may do so on his way there but must remove them immediately upon arrival at his destination.
  3. The prohibition of intimacy on Yom-Kippur extends even to touching one?s wife or sleeping in the same bed.
    1. This includes other Harchakos as well.

Who must fast?

As Yom-Kippur is the only Biblical fast, and as not fasting on Yom-Kippur renders one guilty of Karress, there are far fewer leniencies as to who doesn?t need to fast, and as to when a fast may be broken.

  1. All adults above Bar-Bas Mitzva are obligated to fast; this includes nursing and expecting mothers.
    1. Women within three days from birth don?t need to fast. From three days after until seven days after birth it is the new mother who is central in determining: if she feels she needs to eat she can eat; if she feels she can fast she then should.
    2. Obviously anybody for whom not eating on Yom Kippur is life-threatening should not fast. However if one can get away with Shiurim then one should not eat in any other fashion.
    3. Anyone who would be dangerously affected by not eating should discuss the predicament with a physician and a Rov.
    4. Minors over age nine should not eat on Yom-Kippur night, and should put off their first eating to an hour or two later than their usual first meal.
      1. They should not delay eating by more than an hour or two.
      2. Minors over the age of eleven, whether boy or girl, are rabbinicaly obligated to fast the whole day.
      3. Children below age nine should not fast at all.

As fasting on Yom-Kippur is the most integral part of the day, and the most important element in achieving atonement, it is important to make one?s ability to fast the main focus. Therefore Nursing and expecting mothers, and likewise all sick or weak people should stay in bed as much as they can ? even at the expense of Tefilla Betzibur, or even davening altogether.

Other Minhagim of Yom-Kippur:

  1. There is a minhag to stay up all night Yom Kippur.
    1. As for most people this would make the fast considerably harder, it is not advisable to do so.
    2. There is a Minhag to finish the entire Sefer Tehilim on Yom-Kippur.
    3. There are those who are careful even if they sleep at night, not go to sleep during the entire day.
      1. This is more important than not sleeping at night. Therefore if by not sleeping at night someone will need to take a nap during the day, it is then far better to sleep at night and to stay awake all day.
      2. There is a minhag to stand the whole day.
        1. There is yet a slightly more prevalent minhag to stand throughout the entire davening.

Motzai Yom-Kippur:

  1. On Motzai Yom-Kippur we make Havdala on a cup of wine (or grape juice, beer etc.), and we make a bracha of Aish. We do not use Besamim.
    1. When Yom Kipur falls out on Shabbos there are those who do use besamim.

i.????? One should not change their Minhag either way. If one?s Minhag is to use Besamim they should continue to do so. And if one?s minhag is not to use besamim they should not start to use besamim.

  1. The fire should be from a flame that existed before Yom Kippur or that was lit from a candle that was lit before Yom-Kippur.

i.????? If one doesn?t have such a flame some of the Gedolei Acharonim (Reb Chaim Ozer, and Avodas Hamelech) say one can make it on an electric light ? on an incandescent light bulb (that was lit from before Yom-Kippur ? it is debatable whether one can use light from a light bulb that was lit after).

  1. It is questionable whether one can use fluorescent light bulbs.
  2. On Motzai Yom Kippur we do not extinguish any candles lit before Yom-Kippur.
    1. It is ok to turn off all types of electric lights.
    2. If a Yar Tzeit candle blew out during Yom-Kipur one should rekindle it after Yom-Kipur and allow it to burn out.
    3. Right after Yom Kippur we are noheg to do something towards building the Succah.
      1. Since the purpose of this is to go straight from Yom-Kippur to busying ourselves with Mitzvos, some people busy themselves with Arba Minim.
      2. Many are noheg to make a Seuda on Motzai Yom-Kippur.
